Dear Editor,
I am writing to express my support for a
community.fitliess .centre as proposed by
Dr. Dona'ldI eaI in a letter to the editor last
week. •
As.a. person being directly involved with
health care; I see a facility as an absolute
necessityand not a ltury. Far good reason
health care providers are no longer content
to treat disease when it happens, but are
putting a much greater emphasis on preven-
ting the initial cause of the disease. The
campaigns to discourage cigarette smok-
ing, to discourage drinking and driving and
to encourage physical and mental fitness
are all examples of the above.
I see many physical social and mental
health needs in all age groups in our com-
munity that presently are being neglected.
What I am talking about are those needs
that cannot be Jelled by Doctor's offices and
hospitals, but rather are the responsibility
of the community. If the community does
not do its part these needs will be left unmet.
I see Goderich as being behind in this area.
I see a community fitness centre as hav-
ing facilities for physical. mental and social
development. There would be programs for
each of these areas. I also see such a facility
staffed with professionals in physical fitness
and social development and the needs of
senior citizens etc.
Below are a few examples of how a Com-
munity Fitness Centre could benefit all age
Aou
e
s far as children are concerned it would
help establish fitness behavior patterns for
their future.
For teenagers, there would finally be an
alternative to gravel running and drinking.
The teens of this community lack physical
and- social outlets and must resort to such
activity as driving around The Square just
to get out of the house.
For adults there is no need for me to
describe how STRESS has entered our lives.
A fitness centre would provide an' outlet for
Stress. It would also help prevent coronary
artery disease (our biggest killer) by ex-
erise programs and teaching of healthful
living habits. Perhaps senior citizens are
the one age group that would benefit the
most from this facility. I have so many pa-
tients that have to drive all the way to
Vanastra just to be able to swim because it
helps their arthritis, their heart problems
etc. Without an indoor facility, seniors can-
not get any form of exercise in the winter. If
they go outside they will slip on icy surfaces
and fracture their hip. If the wind is cold,
they will get angina.
The weather makes them prisoners of
their apartments where they are physically
inactive, socially isolated and frequently
depressed. The severity of our weather and
the increasing number of senior citizens in
our community make a communityy fitness
centre more and more essential. Our com-
munity leaders must do something for these
poor lovely souls locked in their apartments.
Good roads and pretty boulevards are simp-
ly not enough.
Perhaps such a facility would cost a lot of
money to build. Perhaps the running of this
facility would lose money and would have to
be supported by taxes. However, just like
our sewer system - a community fitness cen-
tre is an absolute necessity and we should
have one.

Support is evident for fitness facility
Dear editor,
In my office, I have been collecting
signatures to demonstrate what I believe is
but a small sampling of citizens in the
Goderich area who would support the con-
cept of a fitness/indoor
pool/spa/recreation-complex, as suggested
recently in the Signal -Star by Dr. Neal.
With dedicated support, thoughtful plann-
ing, stable administration and skilled

organization and operation, a facility of this
nature could serve our eonununity in a
multitude of ways:
1) for fitness, therapeutic and recreational
purposes
2) for the needs of athletes, childen, young
people, senior citizens, the mentally and
physically handicapped
3) throughout all seasons of the year
4) at an affordable price to all users
The need for such a facility is clearly evi-
dent. The first step appears to be to activate
latent interest into organizational form,
from which planning can take its first begin-
nings.
With interest and
anticipation,
