the Bethel Pentecostal Assembly. The couple lived on Picton Street and have many fond
memories of their three-year stay in Goderich. The couple has three sons, a daughter, 10
grandchildren and three great grandchildren. They have lived in Thamesville since 1974.
Ball's bridge is one of the
area's treasures, says Martha
The rides I have taken in and out and
around the Benmiller area are very
precious to me. They given me good vibes!
They make me think, figure out time and
place, time lost - which can take as much
time as going and returning - on good days,
and people I meet on these trips — Also very
important.
At home, I try to figure out why I was lost,
where and when I made the wrong turn - and
how I ever made it home. This is the puzzle.
I try to work it out at home and get
frustrated and jump in the car ... first thing
I know I'm lost again and nothing is solved.
One time I ended up in Summer Hill - or
some such name. On that trip I happened on
a mail box with Bartlett as the name. That is
my name and I had no idea there was
another one in this part of the country.
I turned into the yard - but no one home. I
haven't found it since. I tried once again. So,
perhaps next summer - if all's well and the
Lord's willin' - I'll try again.
After you make the turn between the Lit-
tle Lakes, you will, eventually, come to a
spot where you see the top of Ball's bridge.
Down you go to a bridge - solid as a rock,
over 100 years old, rusty but beautiful. Just
take a couple of minutes to look around.
Fantastic scenery.
In the water you may - at the right time -
see salmon making or guarding a nest. One
works - the other swims around and around
it.
By this time, the hill in front of you will
scare you to pieces! Especially if it is wet -
or icy! You start the car, you rev it up and
attack. As you swish back and forth - you
just hope there's lots of road at the top.
There IS!
You are so excited you don't know which
way to turn. It doesn't matter, whichever
way, you can get lost. Your,, best bet is to
turn around and retrace your trail and hope
you don't make any turns until you get to the
top of the hill. From there - the little house
where the guard geese hide - you can see
another great dip so just put it in neutral and
hang on.
The scenery is gorgeous - the fields at
your left (you're still on the top) are so, so -
not a row out of line. The buildings in the
distance make you wish you had the camera
handy - but down you go, ZOOM, it is steep
but fun! The rest is peanuts.
Busy farms, you passed a log house on the
right and soon you will see a nice little -?
white house with gingerbread across the
front - so pretty. Now you are on your way
home.
I still think that old bridge should be
preserved. They are ripping them out all
over the country - but couldn't they just
leave this one? I remember some little city
kids we took to that bridge - they still speak
excitedly about it - about the little fish they
caught. The big thrill was being down - down
- at the river level - almost - and how they
felt when they looked up at each end of the
bridge. The thrill of it all has stayed with
them all these years - and some have
• brought their children to Ball's bridge to
pass on the thrill of their own childhood.
I'm speaking for only a few families. How
many others have enjoyed that old bridge '-
not counting the fishermen - big ones - who
also love it? There must be someone out
there who has some influence - or knows so-
meone' who will listen to us and build a new
bridge at another spot .. if needed.
To change the subject - I have another
worry - the one concerning someone trying
to claim some of the land which belongs to
our new beach. What if everyone, up top,
tried to claim the beach below them - we
would lose all of St. Christopher Beach and
the whole area beyond it. Doesn't it scare
you too?
I hope - with the rest of you - that it can't
be done - that someone is looking out for the
new generations that come to Goderich.
Think about it.
Love,
Martha
