being elected to Goderich council to 1982,
Dave Harrison says he's more prepared
the second time around.
"I've beenattending council for a year.
and a half and hopefully, I'll be able to do
the town some, good. I thunk I'll be able to
help people out with, their problems and be
able to work but compromises as situa-
tions arise," he says.
A driver for the Goderich District Am-
bulance Service for 14 years and a
Goderich native, Harrison has also been
involved with the bicentennial committee
and the tourism committee.
Though he's not sure how he'd ac-
complish it, he says he'd like to attract

" I want to Make the beach is ac-
cessible to the public," he says.
He is also in favor of annexing more in-
dustrial land,.
"We need laud to attract mere industries
and we don't have enough land already in
our industrial park."
If elected, Harrison would like to see
council make its decisions faster.
"The BMX track was on the burner for
one and a half years and the hot dog wagon
issue took four or five.montbs and that's
too long. I'd probably be able to give the
person a straight answer by the next coun-
cil meeting or at least a month later," he
says.

WAYNE MCLEAN
Working with Court. Jim Searls for 13
years at the Goderich A Sr P grocery store
has sparked an interest for municipal
politics in Goderich native Wayne
McLean.
"I just got the feeling I'd like to try coun-
cil. I think it'd be interesting. In fact, I
decided. it was time I did do something.
And, I'll give it a good, honest try," he
says.
Attracting industry to town and improv-
ing the job situation in town are two things
McLean wants to accomplish on council.
Developing industry is not an easy thing,
though since it must mould with the town
scheme, he says.
Annexing land to attract industry
depends on which industry the town is try-
ing to attract.
Experience means a
broader viewpoint
JIM SEARLS
Seeking a fourth term on Goderich coun-
cil, Jim Searls says he's mellowed from
. the councillor whose only concern was
financial restraint.
"I'm taking a broader view than I did
five years ago. I now feel more comfor-
table looking at the overall picture."
"Council spending was excessive at one
time but it's been cut down. I've mellowed
quite a bit but I still keep an eye on spen-
ding and make sure it doesn't creep back
in," he says.
A 25 year resident of Goderich who's
served on council for the past seven years,
Searls says the town "has progressed at an
even keel which is a lot better than if it
boomed all at once."
To continue the growth, Searls said he
recently voted against an increase in the
price of industrial land in Goderich.
"Cheap land is the o><tly thing we have to
offer. There are no grants available for us
since we have such low unemployment in
our area," he says.
Annexation should only be done to add to
the area of the town's industrial park

rather than splitting the industrial area
the way council is doing with the annexa-
tion of the 45 acre parcel of land in
Goderich Township.
"If the land was added to the industrial
park, we'd have something to offer," he
says.
As well as attracting new industry, the
town should continue working with
downtown's businesses and increase their
budget rather than cutting it in half as
council recently did, he says.
"We should give businesses credit for
improving their buildings and enhancing
the municipality," he says.
Another priority for Searls is protecting
the beach area for Goderich's public.
"There's no way I'm going to sit back
and see public access denied 'at the
beach," he says.
Searls gives credit to every member of
council for the past several years for the
progress Goderich has made.
"We're definitely on the upswing. The
tax base is getting better all the time but
we can't spend money like drunken sailors
in case everything, goes flat," he says.

"In i,►,t Lawn, .,put., at we tight time and
the right situation, I suppose I'm in favor
of annexation. But, the town's nice the way
it is. If we start building industries all over
the place, we won't be the same anymore.
Growing at a nice, steady pace is the way
to do it," he says.
Another concern of McLean's is plann-
ing the town's spending to benefit as many
people as possible.
"We don't want to throw money away on
frivolous things that aren't of benefit to
everyone," he says.
Though he has not attended any council
meetings, McLean says he'll "soon learn
the ins and outs of it." And, be says he
hopes he can handle the public scrutiny
that goes with the job of councillor.
"If you're diplomatic about it, you can
pretty well please everybody most of the
time," he says. ,
Jim Searls
Searls says his strengths he in his ex-
perience of serving on every committee on
council (except the fire committee) and
his consistency.. _ _ ..
"I say what 1 think. Sometimes it may
not sit well with a person but if 3 think
something's wrong, it's wrong," he says.
"I'll still represent the public as a whole
and will continue to do so."
