The end of year comments were made about Paul Steckle, reeve of Stanley Township, and the man who has served as. Huron County warden during 1985. Hullett Reeve Tom Cunningham acted as master of ceremonies for the evening which concluded with a dance at the Goderich and District Memorial Community Centre. The annual gift to the warden was presented this year, by Goderich Reeve Harry Worsell and Stephen Township Depu- ty Reeve Ralph Weber. Entitled Autumn in the Laurentians, the northern landscape original oil painting was done by Berge A. Missakian of Montreal. Steckle's family, friends and neighbors were in attendance and so were some political colleagues. The provincial minister of health, Murray Elston, congratulated the warden on behalf of the other two members of parliament from Huron County. The provincial agriculture minister Jack Riddell was pre- sent at the banquet, but MP Murray Cardiff sent his regrets. Steckle is leaving municipal politics and is not seeking re-election in the November 12 municipal election. Museum and Historical Jail get grants A total of $2,617,333 in funding 201 museums across Ontario was announced recently by the Honourable Lily Munro, Minister of Citizenship and Culture. "Funding for community museums is bas- ed on standards introduced last year in con- sultation with local museums and provincial organizations," Dr. Munro explained. "The standards outline specific development and up -grading of activities such as research, collection records management, staff train- ing, exhibition and conservation standards and organizing of educational programs." Among theeums receiving assistance were three instiffitions qualifying for sup- port for the first time. MacLachlan Wood- working Museum in the Township of Pitt- sburgh, O'Hara Mill Museum in the Township of Madoc and Spadina in Toronto were awarded grants of $1,623, $1,629 and $15,569 respectively for the first time. "The commitment and hard work of local museums throughout the province allows each of us to reflect upon our common past and vision for the future," Dr. Munro said. "I am delighted to acknowledge community museums for their efforts in responding to their communities' needs through new and expanded programs." This task, assigned at the September 3 Huron -Perth Roman Catholic Separate School Board's professional activity day, in- volves putting into practice the ideas sug- gested for each grade division. Since Sept. 3, all students have received a writing folder which holds their writing for the year. Teachers were requested to try a specific approach to the teaching of writing. During the morning of November 15, teachers will be given an opportunity to share their success and difficulties related to the writing task. Presentors will make suggestions to assist teachers to initiate writing and to promote student growth throughout the school year. In the afternoon, teachers will team about the concept of "conferencing". In the last session of the day, teachers will be assigned a task related to the conferenc- ing process. This task will be evaluated at the next writing workshop to be held in May. These workshops should help teachers better meet the needs of children in the area of writing.
