When it comes to motoring, getti
started iss.half the battle.
Sixtce starting your car normally takes
little more than one or two seconds, it's
easy to assume it's a simple process. Not
so.
When you turn the, key in the ignition
switch, you turn on the starter motor,
which is powered by the battery. A small '
armature on the starter motor turns the
crankshaft, which makf;s the pistons go up
and down. This is called cranking the
engine.
As each piston is drawn down by the tur-
ning of the crankshaft, a mixture of air and
gasoline is drawn into the cylinder.
Another half turn of the crankshaft pushes
the piston up again, compressing the fuel
mixture.
At that point, a sparkplug inserted into
each cylinder fires and burns the com-
pressed gas. The piston is forced down
again by the expanding gases in the
cylinder, and the whole process is
. repeated literally in a flash.
But, as any technician knows, there's
many a blank twixt key and crank.
For example, the ignition system, which
is comprised mainly of a coil, a
distributor, and sparkplugs.and wires can
interfere with starting. It's usually the
first place your technician looks for trou-
ble. A sticking choke is another. Or, your
battery may have become weakened and
deeds replacement.
The thing to remember about buying
batteries is to make sure the new one is
large enough to do the job. Your owner's
manual tells you the minimum size your
car needs. However, it may be good in-
surance to install the largest battery that
will fit your car. It's bound to give you an
edge in really hot or really cold weather.
Motor oil plays a silent but important
role in starting. If the oil is too thick it will
make the engine sluggish or turn over and
battery -draining starts.
Make sure your oil and filter are chang-
ed regularly, and ask your technician
about the right grade and type of motor oil
