Shewas purchased in the Tillsonburg area
by two local "horse -persons" looking for a
safe saddle: animal on which to teach
children to ride. Starry-eyed over Melody's
natural beauty, imppeessive pedigree, and
the owner's assurance that he could safely
"put his young children on her back," they
completely forgot Point One of the Horse
Buyer's Bible - "never buy an untried
animal", proudly loaded their time -bomb
into a borrowed trailer and headed home.
Melody was beautifully halter -broken.
She would follow me about the barnyard like
a dog, sniffing pockets for apples or sugar or
watching over my shoulder as geese landed
on the pond. As well as being far from
saddle -broken, she had the most bizarre ap-
petite. If she wasn't chewing on an old tire
or V -belt, she was licking the paint of Ray

gravel, wire, etc., etc. In; all fairness, her
weak -stomached )wners .would report to
help with these unbunging.operations, barf-
ing their all as they held twitch or passed the
oil -can.
What she did not like, I found out the pain-
ful way, was to be caught and haltered in
her stall. The first time I innocently entered
I was greeted with a barrage of accurate
kicks, pinned in a corner I dimly recall,
looking out the ambulance twindow enroute
to hospital, how red the leaves looked on
Britannia Road.
Meanwhile, my bruises, like the fall
leaves, are at peak colour. My gut is stick -
lung out like -a Regnant pup, ee.broken

of several litres of "Metamucil" (wonderful
stuff!) my first "movement" in five days'l . `
But my morale received a major setback
yesterday when Dr. Chan fearing liver -
damage, informed me I. was off "all
alcohol" for. an indefinite period. I think
communion wine is excluded. I • somehow
resisted the urge to rush out and let
"Melody" finish me off.
I hesitate, even' in these days of free ex-
pression, to explain in a family paper just
what I would like to see done to the person
who unloaded Melody on these babes -in -the -
woods.
The only place for Melody, I'm convinced,
is the: nearest pet food supply emporium.
Her owners think she is just a victim of her
upbringing and some therapy and TLC can
bring her around. Time will tell. Meanwhile

Many teens contribute to the
community and are of value
Dear Editor,
I am writing in response to the letters
about teenage drinking in the Goderich
Signal -Star.
Now that the parents of this town have had
their say about the growing problem of
alcohol consumption by teenagers in
Goderich, how about a word from a
"Teenager"?
I admit that the statistics for teenage
alcohol consumption in Huron County are
staggering; however, there is a surprising
number of young people in town who find
personal satisfaction from various things
aside from consuming alcohol.
Take for example, the young achievers
who spend many hours up at the hospital do-
ing volunteer candy -striping, or the kids
with part-time jobs who are still attending
school.
G.D.C.I.'s student council puts long hours
into such things as fundraisers, and organiz-
ing social functions like school dances, and
rep rallys.
Even the babysitters of this community
deserve recognition for their dedication.
Help appreciated but
attendants are trained
Dear editor,
Concerning the letter dated 16 October
1985 pertaining to the "Good Samaritan",
we congratulate Mr. Saunders on his heroic
efforts, but let us add a word of caution.
On occasion, a well meaning Samaritan
can sometimes jeopardize a patient's life. It
is a well known fact that at these times of
crisis, a person's adrenalin can take over. It
gives them undue strength (to force open
badly crushed doors and bend back steering
Wheels with amazing ability) but 'hinder
their mental ability.
A well-meaning Samaritan untrained to
handle situations of the nature nay ac-
cidently cause additional complications
such as paralysis, hemorrhaging, etc. from
improper extrication. Granted, if there is a
possibility of fire or explosion the person or
persons should be removed but if there is no
such danger they are best left in position un-
til proper assistance is available.
We appreciate the public's support but
highly stress common sense and caution
when encountering such situations.

The Harley niotion listed several r_asons
for recommending the usage of ethanol-

How about these "teenagers"?
Let us give credit where it is due. I am not
in disagreement with the parents and elders
of Goderich; rather, I salute them for taking
a stand on an issue of obvious concern.
My only intention is to direct some of the
attention on those teens who are of definite
value to this community.
