Road grader collides with car on bridge It was a quiet weekend around Goderich for both the town police and the OPP. The only accident occurred Friday after- noon on the Maitland bridge when a road grader and a car collided. Lillian King, 68, of Detroit was driving her 1984 Chrysler over the bridge toward Goderich when she was hit from behind by Keith Rodger, 44, of Auburn, who was driv- ing a road grader. There was $1500 in damages done to the King car and there was no damage to the grader. Underage drinking is also a concern of Recreation Director Jane Netzke because the arena is as legally responsible as the ,server for any charges or lawsuits resulting from events at the arena where alcohol is served. Of all special occasion permits, the ones concerning stag and does are the most troublesome since they allow underage people into the event but prohibit them from drinking. Though underage people are not served, they can still be drinking if someone else buys their drinks. "People on staff have to patrol the event and control the drinking but when the facility holds 288 people, it's hard to watch each and every person," she says. Sometimes, underage drinkers are overlooked.at stag and does when making "money' foie -the honored couple becomes more important than the function itself. Also, permit holders may not be aware of all the regulations and responsibilities con- cerning the permit since a stag and doe may be the only time the permit holder will ever need a permit in his lifetime. With the difficulties surrounding stag and does in mind, Netzke says the recrea- tion department is just beginning an ex- periment to police underage drinking.' A staff member hired by the department will ask for proof of age at the door and stamp the hand of the patron with a green stamp if he's 19 or over. If underage, he will be admitted but stamped with a red stamp which can be easily seen by the staff member patrolling the event... "We'll just kick out anyone with a red stamp so after awhile, the kids just won't Bauer TURBO YOUTH SKATE SIZES 8 - 13 The perfect skate for the beginner or recreational hockey player. Of course, we'll have the change the color of the stamps all the time so no one knows before the event," she says. Goderich Police Chief Pat King says stag and does also cause problems for the police department. "If we go into a stag and doe where minors are permitted and scrutinize every person, we'll get complaints we're living in a police state," he says. "Police have the right to check (for underage drinkers) but we don't want to over -check." Although the police charge quite a number of underage drinkers, King says it's more difficult to get information about who supplied them with the alcohol. King blames the Liquor Control Board. for allowing permits where minors can at- tend events like stag and does where liquor is served. "They're allowing a situation where underage drinking can happen," he says. If the provincial government passel legislation allowing beer and wine to be sold in corner stores, King says the police's job will be even more difficult. "That idea will make it easier for young people to get alcohol and the corner stores aren't going to be able to police it as well as liquor and beer stores," he says. King encourages parents who see adults supplying minors with alcohol to call the police when it's happening so action can be taken. "If we check a place and there are in- fractions, there's no warning. Charges will be laid," he says. The Addiction Research Foundation in Goderich will hold a public forum concern- ing responsible drinking on Thursday, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. at the Legion. Underage drink- ing will be one of the topics addressed.
