The Maple Leaf Chapter IODE held their Appreciation Day September 28th at Knox Church
Hall. Held to commemorate the 85th Anniversary of IODE it was our way of saying "Thank
You" to everyone who has supported projects hi past years. Civic Awartks were presented to
the following: Mayor Palmer, a Certificate of Appreciation to the Citizlens of Goderich by
Cathy McDonald, Regent; Fire. Chief Beacom, the Firefighters Award by Mrs. Audrey
Royal, National Citizenship Chairman and the. Police Relations Award to Chief King,
presented by'Doreen Garrow, Provincial Counsellor. MPP Jack Riddell brought greetings

IODE holds appreciation
day to recognize support
The October meeting of the Maple Leaf
Chapter IODE was held Oct. 1 at the home of
Linda Murphy, with the Regent, Mrs. C.
McDonald presiding. Mrs. P. Stringer read
correspondence from Maitland Manor, of-
fering thanks for the May 24th program,
from Bonnie Dunn, thanking us on behalf of
the Museum for the gift of the Audio -Visual
machine, and from member Helen
McManus.
Mrs. McGill, Education Secretary, told of
Commencement at the high school at which
awards were presented. She also reported
on Mail Box Canada, the good display IODE
had at the Plowing Match, and that IODE
calendars are available at a cost of $3.10.
Mrs. Anderson, Services Secretary, said the
shower gifts for Friendship House were
delivered October 2 and the bale will be
delivered to Hamilton October 10th. Pauline
Knight, Citizenship Chairlady, told of the
purchase of a wreath for services November
llth and asked members to record their
volunteer hours. Beulah Howey, Member-
ship, announced the resignation of one
member and introduced a new member.
Cathy Boddy reported on our Apprecia-
tion Day held September 28th at Knox Chur-
ch. The guest speaker, Carl de Grandis,
Director of the Bluewater Centre, gave a
most interesting speech on the Centre and
answered many questions. He was thanked
by Linda Murphy.

Toastmasters' seminar series,
Speechcraft, helps area speakers
On Wednesday, October 2, members and
. guests of the Circle City Toastmasters Club
-ettthnsiaStically partii*ipated iffthe first -of a
series of seminars called Speecheraft.
Speechcraft workshops are designed by
Toastmasters international, a world-wide
organization dedicated, amongst other
things, to help people learn the art of public
•
speaking. ('ircle City Toastmasters is
working with the Town of Goderich
Recreation Department to bring this service
to the community.
Speechcraft is a series of eight workshops
serving as: -
1a) A refresher course for current and
former Toastmasters.
lbt A was of bringing new members up to
speed.
( c) Most importantly, as an incentive to
anyone interested in developing ➢their
communications skills.
Aspects of public speaking to be covered
in the next eight weeks include:
"icebreakers"; impromptu speaking; how
to introduce a speaker; evaluations;
parliamentary procedures; audio-visual
aids and video tape techniques for instant
replay.
Circle City Toastmasters Club is proud to
announce that in area club competition, held
in Stratford last Saturday, John Penn, one of
our newest members, achieved first place in
the humorous speaking contest.

Carman Hayden w•ho has been a patient in
the Alexandra Marine and General
Hospital, Goderich. has now returned to his
home in the village

Kaye Pennell have returned to their suni-
nier home in Port Albert from a bus tour of
the Pocono Mountains near Scranton Penn-
sylvania. Side tours were made to Moscow
nn an antique steam tram, and to the Camel
Back Ski Resort area. The Scanlon area was
famous fnr the Anthracite Coal Mines.

Mr. and Mrs. Tim O'Connor of Pickering

A shower was held for Anne Drennan on
Oct. 1, at St. Joseph's. Kingsbridge.
A bus load of local women went to Samks
in Toronto last Saturday to get a head start
on their Christmas shopping. Everyone
enjoyed the day out.
On Oct. 6, Mrs. Bernadine Kinney held an
open house for neighbours to come and
welcome Mr. and Mrs. Ian Keuls to our
community. They are the new owners of

Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Ferguson and family

Simpson on Sunday evening.
Women teachers address issues
Education today was the main topic of
discussion at the September meeting of the
Huron Women Teachers' Association
(HWTA), held in Holmesville.
Guest speaker for the evening was
Eleanor Stewart of the Public Relation Ser-
vices, Federated Women Teachers'
Association of Ontario in Toronto.
She spoke about the increasing complex-
ities of educating youth and cited examples
showing the growth of violence, the number
of children with problems and the litigious
nature of society today.
The meeting focussed on issues such as
Excellence in Education. this year's theme,
and Bill 30, regarding joint funding of
separate schools.
In attendance were HWTA executive
members, convenors and key teachers who
represent each of the public elementary
schools in Huron County.
They addressed a variety of concerns in-
cluding finance, sponsorship of courses, up-
coming conferences and the donation of a
freezer to Survival Through Friendship
House in Goderich.
