With the price of gas these days, it could lead to more horse traffic.
While gas signs boldly display the price regular gasoline to be 49.7
cents per litre, Lisa. Vanden Broeck leads her pet, Dudley, across
the Five Points intersection. Lisa was not protesting the high price
of gasoline, but rather, was one of 57 participants in the Lions' first
Walk-a-Dog-a-Thon Sunday which raised $5,500 locally. People and
their pets walked a 10 km. route through the streets of Goderich to
raise money for the Canine Vision Centre which will train dogs to
work with visually impaired Canadians. ( photo by Dave Sykes)
Huron Board urges protection of
rights during Private Property Week
Traditionally; the right to own and
maintain property has been a vital
component of this country's heritage.
And it is a right that the Ontario Real
Estate Association (OREA) would like to
see preserved and entrenched in the
country's constitution.
Man has always considered his home his
castle and Canadians, undoubtedly, have
always considered owning property a
right. However, the Association contends
that property rights are under attack at all
levels of society and that provincial laws,
lack of protection in the constitution and
municipal planning have .combined to
erode property rights.
In an effort to 'raise the profile and
encourage awareness of property rights,
the, OREA has sponsored Private Property
Week each year in October. The fifth
Private Property Week extends through to
Thanksgiving Monday. ,
The OREA is an organization which
represents more than 30,000 real estate
professionals in 48 Local real estate boards.
I..,cally, the Huron Real Estate Board and
its membership kicked off Private
Property Week with a breakfast meeting
in (;oderich Monday.
Local dignitaries, real estate
professionals, businessmen and area
political representatives, Huron -Bruce
MP Murray Cardiff and Jack Riddell,
Minister of Agriculture, helped the local
board launch the week.
The Huron Board is part of Region 2 of
the ()REA and regional vice-president,
Moira Knox addressed the meeting
lutlining the significance of addressing the
issue of property rights.
Property rights impact on everyon.

awareness 01 property rights but Knox
said it has nagging concerns.
"We are concerned that there has been
an increase in restrictive laws affecting
ownership and the erosion of property
rights is a major concern," she said. "Our
second concern is that the Canadian
Constitution does not recognize property
rights. Since 1980, the association has
lobbied for property rights."
A celebration of freedom, heritage, and
pride of ownership, Private Property
Week is also designed to bring matters of
ownership to public attention. She said
that over 700 laws affect Ontario property
owners.
Lauding the efforts of the real estate
profession and the employment it provides
to Canadians, Huron -Bruce MP Murray
-Cardiff said that property rights must be
supported. "We must support property
rights," he said. "And if we don't talk
about it, nothing happens."
He suggested that the matter of property
rights would be given further attention in
the House of Commons in future.
Ontario's new minister of agriculture,
Jack Riddell, told the meeting that a
property rights resolution was introduced
in the Legislature by Herb Epp, Waterloo
M PP, and supported by all parties. He said
only the province of Quebec is holding up
an all -province agreement on the matter.
With an election in Quebec imminent, he
suggested there would be action on the
matter.
