Syd Lawson Goderich Giveg enerou sly to UNICEF this Hallowe'en night Dear Editor, Foxe hundred t ousand school children in Ontario Will carry UNICEF boxes as they trick -or -treat door to door on Hallowe'en night — as they have done in Ontario for more than 30 years. While, we may 'have come to take the 'familiar orange and black boxes for granted over the years, millions of children around the world will never take the work of UNICEF for granted. It provides the means of their survival and development. The money collected at Hallowe'en has changed for the better the lives of children world-wide. While clean water remains a rare and precious commodity in much of the Third World, UNICEF -drilled wells in communities small and large have meant children are protected from water -born diseases and mothers are able to give more time to the care of their children, having been relieved of the duties of finding and carrying water. The fight against communicable diseases is also being waged through UNICEF"S immunization program. It is a battle that can be won. Smallpox, once the scourge of whole populations, is now eradicated, with the last reported case being in 1977 in East Africa. Other dread diseases can follow this pattern! Education, health care, improved nutrition and protection from cruelty and neglect are rights all children should enjoy. UNICEF, the children's advocate, is dedicated to the provision and preservation of the right of the child. As Honorary Co -Chairmen of the Ontario UNICEF Committee, we would like to remind you that by being generous when UNICEF's Canadian children call at your door with their collection boxes on Hallowe'en, you are helping UNICEF's children world-wide toward a brighter future. Thank you for helping to give the children a tomorrow. Sincerely, Hon. William G. Davis, P.C., Q.C. and Kathleen Davis Honorary Co -Chairmen Ontario UNICEF Committee Scouts hold successful bottle drive Dear editor, I wish to express a word of appreciation to the people of Goderich who responded so well to our Cub -Scout Bottle drive, Saturday, Oct. 5. Your support of this worthy boys' program is greatly appreciated. The boys who helped with this door to door canvass and the parents who came out to drive, are also to be thanked. I wish to thank the lady who went to her garage fol a box of empty bottles, only to discover that she had locked herself out of her house. Fortunately, we were able to get a basement window open, and one of our Cubs crawled inside, and got her front door open again. Through all this, our lady friend remained calm and very gracious. And I know she will open her door again to our boys another time. Thank you. For the most part, these young boys have been well received. However, there are the exceptions. One lady snapped back "No, and if I did, I'd sell them myself." A young CUB doing his duty doesn't need to be treated like this. A simple, "Yes or No thank you," he can understand as sufficient. Again, on behalf of the 9th Goderich Scout Group Committee, our thanks to Goderich residents. Yours truly, Robert O. Ball Readers thank Tory for her work in windsurfing Dear Editor, I enjoyed seeing the Sept. 18 Dave Sykes photos of the annual Goderich Fun Cup regatta at Point Farms Provincial Park. They brought back pleasant memories. As newcomers to the world of sailboar- ding this past summer, my family and I find it fun and exciting. Our sailboat has been almost drydocked. The recent fun cup proved to be a good chance for us to mix it up with other sailboarders and have a thoroughly en- joyable time. We definitely plan on atten- ding again next year and we are en- thusiastically recruiting others to join us. In your caption for the pictures, you acknowledged Pat Gillies of Cambridge as the direction of the regatta. I would simply like to let area residents know that Tory McDonald, of the Goderich Windsurfing shop on Church St., was "co -host" with Pat. Tory has been a big stimulant to our wind- surfing this summer. Thanks again Tory, for your help and en- couragement all 'summer and for a fun September regatta! Goderich is gaining a good reputation for windsurfing! !
