He said a tripartite stabilization program for red meat producers should be in effect by the end of October. (photo by Susan Hundertmark ) Stabilization program coming, says Riddell • from page 1 Philadelphia, Riddell said his ministry has recently sold $3 million in poultry, cattle and hogs in China. "These efforts to increase exports are something I believe in very strongly. I feel this is a very tangible way to improve financial prospects for our producers by giving them more places to sell their products." Over -production in Canada and more countries becoming major exporters of food makes it difficult for Canada to hold to its markets, he said. However, Riddell said his "personal caution light" goes on when anyone mentions free trade with the U.S. "As the United States seems to interpret it, free trade means we're free to buy all the goods they can possibly ship up here and they're free to stop any of our products from crossing their borders," he said. Though he said he's willing to discuss free trade, Riddell said he's worried about the fate of Ontario agriculture with free trade. "I'm scared skinny about any movement to free trade in the true sense of the word. It's difficult to compete with our friends south of the border," he said. "When it comes to commodities such as chickens, we can't compete. The state of Georgia could flood our market with all the chicken we could eat because they have more favorable climatic conditions." Riddell also questioned if Canada's wine industry and car industry could survive with free trade in operation. "I don't want to turn a deaf ear to free trade. I want to discuss it and determine where we're going to be winners and losers and decide whether we're prepared to lose in those areas," he said. A 17 -year-old can be six feet tall and 190 pounds and we didn't know who to look for. We should at least get a description so we can help the police," said Coun. Peter McCauley. Coun. Glen Carey agreed saying young offenders should forfeit their rights under the act when they escape. "I heard an outcry of a limited sort when the three broke out of the institution. I think we. Should petition the province to make the necessary amendments to the legislation so their identities could be known," he said. Moody hearing held over Boxes of sealed records seized from the Captain Fats fishery owned by Ron Moody of Goderich, will be reviewed in provincial court here Thursday before Judge Gary Hunter. Ministry of Natural resources officials seized the records of Moody and Jim Sovie in two separate raids and the records were placed in sealed containers. The court will now review the documents seized to ensure the ministry has seized only the documents as required and as outlined on the search warrants issued by a justice of the peace. In the story that appeared on the front page of the Oct. 2 edition of the Signal -Star, it was reported that Moody had sent letters to several politicians without response. A spokesman for Jack Riddell's office said the matter is being dealt with and that the minister's staff has been in touch with Moody by phone.
