The Goderich Junior C Sailors have drop- ped anchor and begun playing on home ice. They held their first practice on Thursday night and played an exhibition game against Walkerton on Sunday. The newly -formed , Sailors encountered rough seas and were almost thrown over- board as Walkerton won the game 8-2. It was a hard fought contest with over 231 minutes in penalties assessed. The Sailors had 125 minutes, while the Walkerton team had 106 minutes. Penalties were a factor in the .game, but the Goderich Sailors were definitely outplayed. Walkerton' put one in the net in the first minute of the game and scored again at the five minute mark of the first period. Goderich fought back with goals by Kevin Telford and Darryl Madge and it was 2-2 after the first period. The Second period was filled with penalties and Walkerton scored four goals, three of them scored with Goderich players in the penalty box. In the third, Walkerton scored two more goals on their way to an 8-2 rout over the Sailors. It was the third game the Goderich squad has played together as a team. Junior C team ready for action If you have been in the Goderich arena recently and noticed an anchor painted at centre ice with the word Sailor printed around it. You may be wondering what is go- ing on. The Goderich.Sailors is the name of the newly formed Junior C hockey team. They would love to be given a great big°Goderich Welcome as they open their 1985-86 regular season here Friday night at 8:30 p.m. They have dropped anchor and they hope to swab the deck with the other teams in the Huron Perth league. There competition is stiff and no one should be expecting miracles. The team has done well just to gather enough sponsors and get a team on the ice. Before the season even started the team ran into difficulties. The biggest one being the availability of ice time at the Goderich arena. The ice was not put in until Sept. 26 because of the car show. With the Junior C regular schedule starting Friday Oct. 4 in Goderich, the team was forced to practice in Centralia an old army installatin just out- side of Exeter. "We understood the problem with the car show and we tried to work around it. The problem was we had a hard time getting rides for players to make it to the practices. A number of our key players are attending Universtity at Western and it was hard for them to make it out," said Dan Duncan coach of the Goderich Sailors. "At one point we were thinking of pulling the plug before we got in too deep. I mean when your trying to pick a team and only 20 guys show up to a practice, you have to look at what kind of team you are going to be able WORKWEAR Large selection Convenient. • Day and Evening hopping till 9 p.rn fonday toltlurday to put on the ice," he said. "A few of the better guys that we are hop- ing will come out, mainly due to football season or one thing and another. Four of our guys go to school in London, John Thomp- son, Tim Chisholm, Kevin Lee and Darryl Madge," Duncan said. Both Thompson and Madge are trying out for the Western Mustangs hockey team. But it is rumored that they maybe packing in the Mustangs and sticking to the Sailors. When the final cuts are made and the roster is chopped down to 18 players. two goal tenders and two substitutes, by October 4. Goderich should have a fairly competitive Jr. C team. The team has two imports in camp, Todd Hinton a goaltender from Alviston and Kelly Dundas a defenseman also from Alviston• Since most of the home games are played Friday nights and Sundays they come to Goderich and stay with relatives. Their mileage is paid for by the team. Coach Duncan has been approached by good calibre hockey players from a far distance away. They are interested in play- ing for the Goderich team, but the team has to find them jobs. As far as the tea money situation goes they are doing The community has really thrown t r support behind the them. However they are still accepting private donations as well as corporate sponsors. All the people involved in the team have done a good job and should be con- gratulated. Although the team is 0-3 in ex- hibition play.
