Seale days," I've decided, I should a stood
in bed! So, let's find something that makes
me laugh and this is what I've found. Most
stories lOse something in. the re -telling, but
here it is:
This Air Force couple, stationed at Clinton
(how many years ago?), were transferred
ed
to Portage la Prairie and this happened on
their first big snowfall out on the big,
lonesome prairie -e -e. They had partied with
friends who lived out of the Town. It was late
and stormy and Don was sleepy. Vickie was
a 'new' driver but she decided it was up to
her to drive. Under the circumstances, it
was safer. So they headed out into the
storm.
The snow was deep and the trail bad
disappeared. That meant she was in trouble.
Suddenly Don ;was awakened by Vickie's
Cries. Eve;rthing had gone black and she
didn't know where they were. Big Don had
trouble pushing: tie, p r gpen., . h . he.`.
found they were in"the midiie of a- hayttacIt..)
To make things worse, the Volkswagen
wouldn't start (perhaps just as well under
those conditions) and he tore that haystack
to pieces just getting out of it.
The only thing to do was get back to their
friends, so he would try and Vickie must
stay. He had a rough time fighting that
storm. He bumped into something and final-
ly limped into his friends' house. What a
night!
In the meantime, Vickie was scared to
pieces in the dark and couldn't stand it any
longer. So, she also fought her way back.
She could have been frozen to death otic
there, but she walked into her friends' home
to see Don lying on a couch, drink in hand
and some blonde rubbing his leg.
Well! She was madder than that storm
and soon convinced him his leg wasn't
broken — but might be if he didn't MOVE!
Their friends drove them home. Next day
they picked them up to look for their little
BUG in a haystack.
"You'd never believe how many
haystacks we had to feel," Vickie said, "to
find that car." Deep snow, no tracks. Can't
you just picture the whole thing?
The next day they had to take Don to the
hospital - his leg was broken!
While they had lived in Goderich, they and
another couple - Matt and Janie, Walt and D
Travelled all over Huron County. We had
the conveyance and we all had a lot of fun.
No one had much money - honestly. THEY
were the GOOD OLD DAYS. The fishing
rod, the grate from the oven, The coffee pot,
hamburg and other stuff was always in the
back of the car, ready for a camp fire.
We usually ended our day at Pipers' Dam
- end of Mill Road. We lugged everything .
down to the last level - the one ABOVE the
water. The swimming was good. Just walk-
ing in the river - always shallow in summer -
was fun and when you went around the first
bend to the right, you stepped into icy cold
water and THAT really shook you up.
If there were just four of us, we would play
cards for an hour or so - often it was getting
too dark to see the cards before we headed
up top. The sun was setting and we were all
tired and had had a nice day to remember.
I can only wish that all your days can be
worth remembering — they help you smile
when you are not in the mood to go picnick-
ing any more.
Love,
Martha
