Former B division ball
teams now A leaders in
GMSL men's slowpitch
BY BREWSTER
As the GMSL regular schedule ap-
proaches the half -way mark, one must be
somewhat surprised by the present stan-
dings. Three of last year's "B" teams now
lead the league.
I've had plenty of feedback on how lucky
Ernies has been. With a 7 and 1 record, I'd
say that they are making their own luck and
only a good team can do that. Both Ideal
Supply and Goderich Chrysler required
seventh inning homers to salvage a tie with
Little Bowl. Boyes Transport picked up two
more solid wins this week. These three
teams are on top because they're playing
good ball.
The surprises don't stop there. Three of
last year's "A" contenders are struggling
for a respectable ."B" finish. The Green
Machine, 1984 "C" champions could well
become a "B" contender.
It appears as though the best from the
past are aging and the middle teams are im-
proving.
The lower end is still weak and likely
won't iml3rove much without a change in
recruiting and game strategy.
Only seven points separate our top twelve
teams. Two other teams, Dearborn Steelers
and Coyotes should be there by seasons end.
That makes 14 teams, all capable of winning
on a given night. This parity has been
achieved without a formal draft system. -
In the past, I have supported the introduc-
tion of a draft. But I must give due respect to
what has happened this year — Parity
Without Politics!
Let's take a look at the scoreboard this
past week. Port Albert Bulldogs edged the
Coyotes 6 - 3. Ernies Roadhouse Raiders
routed Garb and Gear 14 : 0 and Murphy's
Green Machine 19 - 8. Boyes Transport
blanked the Renegades 16.. - 0 and gassed
Sunny's 14 - 5.
Little Bowl tied Ideal Supply 8 - 8 and
Goderich Chrysler 4 - 4. Canadian tire pick-
ed up a solid 8 - 3 victory over Nissan and
then trampled (;arh and Gar ? The
BB's edged Local 1863 4 - 3 and mauled the
Gators 12 - 3.
Murphys scored five in the fourth and held
on to beat the Elevators 13 --11. Elevators
then turned it around and blanked Sifto 4 - 0.
Dearborn Steelers downed the Gators 11 - 5
and over -powered the Renegades 22 -' 0 in
five. Sifto took a double pounding thi:
week losing 17 - 2 to Chrysler and 16 - 3 to
•Sunnv's.
•
MVP selections from this week's games
include Tom Crawford, Bob Marden, .Karl'
