Former teacher honored
tat retirement party
John K. Young of Mitchell and Mr. and
,MWS. Alan Moore of Stratford and Mr. and
Mrs. Fred Herd also of Stratford called on
Ellen Johnston and Laura Phillips, recently.
Jean Andrews is a patient in. Clinton
Public Hospital. She is wished a speedy
,recovery.
'Mr. and Mrs. Len Kolkman moved into
their new home in Auburn recently.
Ten former students and friends of Carl
Mills, who taught school at U.S.S. No. 16 of
East and West Wawanosh Townships at-
tended a retirement party for him at
Dashwood Ontario. Mrs. Jack Armstrong of -
Auburn composed and read a tribute to
Carl, recalling some of his events at the
school where he formerly taught.
Remember Balls Cemetery Service will
be June 30 at 3 p:m. The speaker will be Rev.
Robin Lyons of St. Mark's Anglican Church,
Auburn.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Vandongen of Auburn
are proud to announce the graduation of
their son Frank frons Humber College,
Toronto, with an Honors Degree in Business
Administration. Frank is a graduate of
Goderich District Collegiate and he has ac-
cepted a position with J.J. Taylor of Bramp-
ton. ,
Mr. and Mrs. Alf Weston of Toronto
visited on the weekend with her mother.
Mary Rollison and brother, Murray.
Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd McLarty of Goderich
visited Mr. and Mrs. Tom Lawlor on
Wednesday.
William Anderson of Newmarket visited
on the weekend with his parents. Mr. and
Mrs. Oliver Anderson.
Bonnie Armour and daughter, Julia of Kit-
chener visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs;,
Tom Jardin.

Miss Yvonne Bean of Toronto visited her
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Bean on the
weekend.

was married to Brian Holling on Saturday
June 22 at Knox United Church.
Ted Mills, is a patient in Clinton Public
Hospital. He is wished a speedy recovery.
Congratulations go out, to Mr. and Mrs.
Gordon Wall who celebrated their 40th An-
niversary on June 22 at the Wingham Legion
Hall. Mrs. Wall is the former Marjorie Ar-
thur of Auburn.
Gordon Powell was home with his family
for the weekend but will be returning to
University Hospital in London.
4-H news
Auburn 1, 4-H Club held their sixth
meeting on June 18 at 7 p.m. at the Auburn
Library. Pam opened the meeting with the
4-H Pledge.
On June 19 the club will be entertaining
,Pthe Auburn Lion's Club and on July 10
members will. be entertaining the
Londesboro Women's Institute.
Linda is also leading the Safety Club star-
ting June 25 at 6:30 p.m. and finishing on
June 26 at 6:30 p.m. She is involving all
meetings into two nights. Bring your own
name tags. Hope to sec you there.

highlighted at Auburn WI
The June meeting of Women's Institute
was held June 18th in the Community Cen-
tre. The meeting ,was on Family and Con-
sumer Affairs conducted by Mrs. Elliott
Lapp and Lillian Leatherland.
The meeting opened with the singing of In-
stitute Ode, Mary Stewart Collect and 0
Canada , with Mrs. Donald Haines at the
piano.
The president Mrs. Leonard Archambault
opened the meeting with a poem "They".
Minutes were read by Mrs. Donald Haines,
assistant Secretary Treasurer.
• It was decided to send money to the Lady
Diana Nursery at Clinton. The picnic will be
held in Clinton on July 8th and everyone is to
take her own beverage. Anyone wishing to
go, contact Mrs. Robert Peck.
Card Report was given by Lillian
Letherland.
Roll call was answered with a special
memory of our grandmothers. There were
13 present.
Mrs. Elliott Lapp introduced the speaker
Marie Webster who showed pictures of her
trip to the Barbados and gave an interesting
talk. She had several articles to show that
she had brought back. Lillian Letheriand
thanked Marie and presented her with a
gift.
Marion Haggett gave a reading of a
Women's Institute meeting that was held in
Foresters Hall in Auburn in 1953. This prov-
ed very interesting.
Mrs. Donald Haines and Mrs. Leonard Ar-
. charnbault gave reports from the District.
Annual. There will be no meeting in August.
The meeting closed with singing The Queen
and Grace. A delicious lunch was served by
hostesses Mrs. Tom Lawlor, Mrs. Leonard
Archambault and Mrs. Roy Daer.
Prizes were given to Lillian Letherland
. who had the lucky plate, Marie Webster who
had a birthday closest to that day and Betty
Archambault who picked berries that day.
There will be no Sunday School at Knox
• United Church next Sunday .June 30th.
Anyone wishing to begin classes in the fall
are asked to call Karen Webster so that the
correct number of papers, etc. can be
ordered. Anyone interested in a teen class
are also asked to contact Karen.
The U.C.W. General Meeting will be held
Wed., June 26th at 8 p.m. The guest
speakers will be Liz Stryker and Gerri Long
from Saratoga Boys Home. All • are
welcome.
Tiger Dunlop ..WI holds banquet
Tiger Dunlop Women's Institute members
enjoyed their Sunshine Sister Banquet at St.
George's Parish Hall on Thursday, June 20
at 12:30 noon. After, the meal members
retired to another room for their meeting
with president, Cora Sherwood presiding.
Members enjoyed the exchange of gifts and
then honored two of their members who
were soon to celebrate their 50th wedding
anniversary. Mrs, Oz. Falkiner - June 21
and Mrs. R. Buchanan July 8 with a Golden
Wedding China cup and saucer.
Minutes of previous meeting were read by
the secretary, Mrs. G. Kaitting and cor-
respondence attended to include a letter
from Lady Diana Nursery School; In
Memorial Fund "Erland Lee (Museum)
Home" cards; card of thanks from Helen
Stoll; receipt from Canadian Red Cross
Society; ' Financial report and St nding
Committee Conveners reports from Huron
West Spring Rally; a letter from Huron
County. Branch of the Architectural Con-
servancy of Ontario informing members of
a lecture on the topic of "Antique (:nrdonc"
and "Period landscapes for Restored
Houses, 1830-1930" at Assessment Building,
Caledonia Terrace, August 12 at 8 p.m. with
Scott G. Kuntz from Ann Arbor, Mich. as
lecturer; Mrs. Sherwood read an interesting
article by Bernice Noblitt, president of the
Federated Women's Institute of Canada, on
the important roll Women's Institutes have
played during the years. Programmes of the
branches were given to the members as
werethe Home & Country Magazines.
Members made final plans for the
Graduation Banquet of Colborne School
graduates Monday, June 24. Members were
informed of the meeting in Colborne Twp.
Hall June 27 at 8 p.m. regarding Ses-
quicentennial. Any pictures of present and
former importance and information would
be very helpful in this venture.
The- ATV Meeting is to rise a picnic
meeting, hopefully at St. Christopher's
Beach, Wednesday, July 24 from 2 - 4:30
p.m. Plans are to view the microfilming of
our books at one of our fall meetings.

nearby Conservation areas
Thirty-nine members and friends of the
Goderich Garden Club enjoyed a bus tour
arranged by the Program Committee. Edith
Lockhart and Jean Finlayson.
The morning itinerary included visits to
Hullett and Wawanosh Conservation Areas.
In the afternoon the group visited the home
of Mr. and Mrs. Wacker near Kintaii. Here
we were impressed by the spectacular view
and the delightful gardens with many
varieties of beautiful flowers and. herbs. The
attractive stone house is unique as, with no
hydro available, electric power is generated
by the wind and sun.
A brief business meeting, chaired by
Edith Lockhart, was held during the lunch
break. The flowers at the hospital have been
planted by Frances Worsell Convenor, and
volunteers Jean Adams, Elizabeth Ball,
Ruth Johnston, and Peggy Lumsden. These
flower gardens donated and maintained by
the Garden Club beautify the approach to
the hospital.
Members were remindna ^F the Mayors'
Blooming Contest, being held in Goderich
this year. Gardeners may apply or be
nominated for participation. Jean Barnett
and Edith Lockhart represent the Garden
i.lub on the Committee planning this event.
The theme of the Flower Festival this
year is "Salute to Youth". The Flower
Festival is a non-competitve display of
floral arrangments in the Courthouse, dur-
ing the Festival of the Arts on July 18, 19 and
20. Telephone, Convenor Betty Allen, 524-
9324 if you are interested in taking part.
Reports on the regional spring meeting
were prepared by President Jean Barnett
and Secretary Eileen O'Brien. .
Members were invited to attend the
Bayfield Flower Show at the Fair on August
23, 24 and 25.
The September meeting of the Goderich
Garden Club will be held in the Assessment
Building on Wednesday, Sept., 18. The topic
for the evening will be "The Mayor's
Beautification Program."
New pastor at Lutheran Church
The Rev. Fritz Schmidt is the vacancy
pastor at Berea -By -The -Water Lutheran
Church, Gibbons Street, effective im-
mediately.
Pastor Schmidt came to Goderich from
Kingsville. Ontario. and will serve the on-
gregation until a new fulltime pastor is nam-
ed.
Sunday worship service at Berea will be
at the usual time, 10:30 a.m. Sunday School
has been discontinued for the summer and
will be resume in September.
