Adoption legislation is regressive
T)ear editor,
Following your article published last
week on the issue of adoption disclosure, I
am writing to provide some further infor-
mation to your readers.
Most social work professionals have
strongly supported more openness concern-
ing the disclosure of personal background
information to adult adoptees. However,
this remains a complex matter with three
groups of people (the adoptee,, natural
parents and adoptive parents) whose rights
Kid feelings need to be protected. As in most
complex issues the rights and feelings of
these three groups are frequently in con-
flict.
Professionally, along with many of my
colleagues, I view this new legislation, on
adoption disclosure as regressive. To
legislate the withholding of non -identifying
information to adult adoptees appears in-
sensitive to the emotional needs of a signifi-
cant group of people. Fortunately, the lob-
bying by interested groups - including the
children's aid soriPtiec - has nanceri the nrn_
LETTERS
vincial government to re-examine this
legislation prior to the enactment of the
Child and Family Services Act in October
1985. k ---
Citizens with an interegt in this matter are
encouraged to express their concerns and
views with their local member of the Pro-
vincial government, as your article in-
dicated. People may also wish to write Io
Dean Ralph Garber who has been commi ,.
sioned to study this matter and report his
findings to. the Ministry of Community and
Social Services. Correspondence to Dean
Garber will be received at the following ad-
dress - 700 Bay Street, 2nd Floor, Toronto,
Ontario. M5G 1Z6.
Yours very truly,
John V, Penn,
Executive Director.
Kids need a place to ride
Dear, editor,
Aftgr the last episode on the continuing
sage of a BMX track contained in ,the
Goderich Signal -Star on Wednesday, we felt
compelled to write the next chapter.
1. Regarding the remarks of Mr. Wheeler',.
can racing a 20 pound bicycle realistically
be compared to racing a 2,000 lb. car or even
a 1,000 lb. motorcycle? Do you realize a
BMX bicycle is a 20 inch bicycle powered by
"people power"? Do you realize that, to be
able to pedal a bicycle in no way trains you
to drd,' race a car or race a motorcycle?
2. The age group for BMX is from five to
55 which is the same ages as any other sport
in Goderich that the Town supports,. What
different age group could Mr. McCabe be
referring to?
3. As to Harry Worsell, what's wrong with
today's youth? If everyone adopted hie :t-
titude we wouldn't have ball diamonds,
horse race track, high school track or any
other sports facility since these sports are
all conducted outside and end up adjacent to
someone's yard.
4. As for the concern for liability, we agree
with deputy -reeve John Doherty in his com-
ments regarding a horseman or a ball
player, we are all talking about the same
general age groups. What is the difference
in liability if a child injures himself on a
bicycle on the Square or on a track?
In closing, is it not better to have a place
for the kids to ride their bikes rather than
the streets or the parks? At least they are
burning energy doing that rather than doing
something quite less acceptable.
Thanks for listening.

Reader insists Christ is God
Dear editor,
May I be permitted a rejoinder to the two
gentlemen who undertook to answer my
question: "Why do most Canadians claim to
believe that Jesus Christ is God'"'
I have before me an ad by the Knights of
Columbus having the title: "God...Or the
Greatest Fraud That Ever Lived". All
through the article all it speaks of is "the
Son of God". How many of the approximate-
ly' 25,000,000 Canadians profess
Catholicism?
Another booklet The Triune God" states
"We declare that Jesus Christ is God." A
'Christian Guidance Book' states: "Jesus
Christ must be God. If He is not God, the Bi-
ble is a lie." How many Canadians claim to
be Protestant?
In the face of the facts N.J. Minaker says,
in his letter: "Most Canadians don't say
Jesus Christ is God."
Almighty God, whose name is Jehovah ex-
pressed his purpose to have his name
"declared in all the earth". (Exodus 9:16;
Roman 9:17) Consequently, who' but his
adversary would want to have that "holy
and reverend" name ( Psalm 111:9) expung-
ed from the Bible or from the recognition of
Him as the Sovereign Ruler of the universe?
Sixty eight times the American Standard
version Bible says: "They shall know that I
am Jehovah" in the Book of Ezekiel alone.
P.A. Jones says: "We know that Jesus
Christ is God." in his letter. Jesus said:
"The hour cometh, and now is, when the
true worshippers shall worship the Father
in spirit and in truth; for the Father seeketh
such to worship him." (John 4:24 )
Sincerely yours,
C.F. Barney.
