PETER'S ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH I got a call this week from a lady who ask- ed me to announce the ladies of Knox Presbyterian Church were holding a chicken barbecue and the proceeds were go- ing to help the victims of the tornado. After she called, I started to reflect on the action of these ladies who have so quickly rallied to help their fellow humans. The same spirit also caused many Cana- dians to rally to feed the starving in Africa. Millions of dollars have been sent to a people whom we do not know but share a common humanity with us. But why give up time, talent and treasure to help others? Because that's what Jesus asks us to do. "I tell you this, anything you did for one of my brothers however humble, you did for me" Matthew 25 - 40. MURRAY - LANGILLE Kent James Murray and Kathleen Mice Langille were married Saturday May 25 at their home in Seaforth by Rev. Lester Roloson of Palmerston. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Hayes of Goderich and the groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Murray of Port Hope. Bridesmaid was LeaAnn Veysey of Varna. Allen and Kevin Langille, sons of the bride gave her away. Best man was Wayne Smith of Listowel. Scott Murray, son of the groom, was'ringbearer and Brett Murray, brother of the groom, from Toronto, ushered guests. Music was provided by Carrol McKim of Lucknow. Following a reception at Goderich with music by the Cavaliers, the couple took a short trip to Toronto. They now reside in Seaforth. • MINISTER'S STUDY As I look around this community I see many people quietly, but effectively, living up to the call to Christian service. Let me give a few examples; the Salvation Army carries out fine work with many people who are in all kinds of need. The Anglican spearheaded t'e work with battered wives in the county add paid for the house that is used as headquarters. Many hours have been spent by this group to help these women and children. A group from my own parish called the St. Vincent de Paul assist people financially and in other ways. This list could go on and on if one were to get a report from all the churches in town. The point of the example is to remind those who say, "What are the churches doing?" — that they are doing. The churches of this corrununity are not only running services on Sunday, but are providing service to the community during the week. It is also a reminder to Christians to keep up the good work and, of course, try to. res- pond to new challenges. It is easy to see the areas in which we Christians fail to live up to the Gospel and it is the job of the prophet to call us back to repentance. Today this preacher has tried to point out some of the ways that Christians are trying to live up to Christ's command to love our neighbor. A special blessing on the ladies of Knox Church for their barbecue and for starting my reflection. Free .Methodist Church. sold The Congregation of the Goderich Free Methodist Church want to inform their com- munity and many friends that the church facility has been sold and that they will be worshiping; beginning June 16, in the new Goderich Lawn Bowling Club building, on Picton Street. The long-range plan is to eventually purchase property and build a -new worship facility. however, in the in- terim, period, the congregation is grateful to the people of the Lawn. Bowling Club for snaking their new building available. This facility is located at 94 Picton Street West, between Waterloo and Wellington Streets. The present program calls for Sunday School to begin at 9:45 a.m., and the Morn- ing Worship Service at 11:00 o'clock. Fur- ther program planning is under considera- tion and will be announced in due time. For the immediate future, the congregation will not have a full-time pastor, but will be ministered to by several of the lay people during the week, and by several guest 'speakers on Sunday mornings. They wish to extend a warm invitation to everyone to come and worship with them. Why do most Canadians claim that Jesus Christ is God Dear editor, The Canadian Charter of (lights and Freedoms opens with the following words: "Whereas Canada is founded upon prin- ciples that recognize the supremacy of God..." "Supremacy" means: the state of being supreme, or in the highest position of power orauthority. The King James version of the Bible is us- ed in "swearing in ceremonies of new Canadians and of political inen who gain the position as members of parliament. It is also used in courts of law. in the Dominion of Canada First Corinthians, 15 tells us that Jfrsu:s 'west is going to rule in the Kingdom of God for a thousand years for the regeneration of obedient mankind. It aiso, tells us: We have testified of God that he raised up Christ" from.the dead ). And "When all things shall be subdued unto him, (Christ), then shall the Son also himself be subject to him (God) that put all things under him ( Christ) That God fnay be all in all." Foirst Corinthians 15 15,25. Psalm 83, verse 18 gives a clear identifica- tion of God and his supreme position: "That inen may know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, art the most high over all the earth." Why, then, do we find that most Canadians claiin to believe that '.Jesus Christ is God"? Sincerely yours, A.F. Barney.
