Whistle collection revives the
steamship era of the Great Lakes
Orbe thing's for sure.
Stan Meriam and Ralph Morris could
have spared their backs and latched on to
hundreds of fighter.,hobbies,.
But the two Goderich men share a love
and affinity for the steamships and
freighters'tljat used to ply the Great Lakes
in years gone „by. And while many of the
ships the men worked have found the scrap
heap or' have been reduced to storage
barges, many parts of those ships, including
whistles, have been carefully salvaged and
restored by the duo.
For Meriam, who sailed for, ten years
before giving ".:p the lake for the routine of a
"land job" in 1953, collecting is more of a
passion than a hobby. Working the ships is
still a way of life for Morris who got his first
job as Stan coming ashore and is now the
chief engineer aboard the Oakglen.
in 1981 the duo began collecting
memorabilia from retired steamships and
now their collection of steam whistles is a
highlight at steam shows. They will display
their collection to the Great Lakes Steam
Whistle Blast in,,Marysville, Michigan June
22 and another show in Marine City on
Labour Day beckons.
They attended their first show last year
and displayed whistles from the A.A. Hud-
son, Starbuck, Goderich, Judith M. Pierson
and Mantadoc.
The Meriam home is decorated with an
assortment of steamship guages,
painstakingly restored and stripped of
several coats of paint. Restoration of the
paint -laden whistles and guages is time con-
suming considering the delicate nature of
the brass.
Morris, now with P and H Shipping of
Mississauga, worked the Heimbecker for
eight seasons before becoming chief
engineer on the Oakglen. He is also the
owner of a 1902 Case steam engine that was
rescued from the wilderness and
transported 341 miles to the TransCanada
highway before it could be shipped to On-
tario. It took two long winters to get the old
Case in shape but now it is the highlight of
many parades and shows in the area.
The steam whistles that Meriam and Mor-
ris have restored mean that a part of the
legend and history of the Great Lakes will
continue to thrive and rekindle memories
for many sailors. k -

Give a whistle
Ralph Morris and Stan Meriam of Goderich display some of the steamship whistles they will
be showing off at the Great Lakes Live Steam Whistle Blast at Marysville, Michigan June
22. The whistles, salvaged from freighters that once patrolled the Great Lakes, bring back
many fond memories for the sailors. Stan, who sailed for ten years, also has a host of
freighter memorabilia adorning the walls in his Mary Street home. Ralph still works as
chief engineer aboard the Oakglen. ( photos by Dave Sykes)
