Transport Canada engineers tour harbor development
GODERICH SIGNAL -STAR, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 12, 1985—PAGE 9
Eleven Transport ,Canada engineers
from across the country took a tugboat
ride to view Goderich's developing harbor
as a field trip for their annual get together
last week.
The $17.5. million s expansion of port
facilities is an unusual project for Ontario
and the most extensive in the province this
year, Dqug Mattingley, regional engineer
of Harbor and Ports, Transport Canada
said.
"It's typical of construction that usually
happens In Eastern Canada and Quebec,"
he said.
With the underpinning of the south pier
wall fronting the grain terminals com-
pleted, the fendering on the docks will be
completed.
The breakwater, which will extend 610
metres out from the Sifto mine property at
the mouth of the Maitland River should be
finished in the next four weeks. Also, 10 per
Fent of the Phase 1 dredging, in the chan-
nel and aiong the south pier, has been
done.
The dredging should be done by the end
of this year. "The elevators should be
ready for seaway depth this year."
"We're anticipating sizeable funding
though we've had no official word yet for
the new wharf. We hope to go to tender by
mid-July," he said,
The 244 metre wharf will be constructed
on the north side of Domtar Inc.'s Sifts salt
mine and is expected to take 12 months to
complete. It will double wharfage for the
mine and permit a' significant increase in
tonnage and a faster turnaround for
vessels.
Because the project is running ahead of
schedule, it should be completed in 1986 in-
stead of 1987 as was originally. expected.
When port improvements are finished
revenue is expected to top $1 million.
"Goderich is the highest revenue pro-
ducer of the 37 small ports under federal
jurisdiction. That means we're impor-
tant," says Goderich Mayor Eileen
Palmer.

United Church members are
asked to donate to tornado relief
London Conference President, John King
of Hickson, 'a victim of the Woodstock tor-
nado of 1979, has invited the membership of
the United Church to respond generously to
the financial" needs of the people in Barrie
and surrounding area. A recent visit reveal-
ed the magnitude of the disaster.
Upon authorization of the Conference in
Leamington, congregations have been ask-
ed to collect donations between now and Ju-
ly 1, to forward the money to the Conference
Office, who will then send the money to the
disaster area fund. In this way it is hoped
that funds will receive matching govern-
ment grants.
The goal is to raise over $100,000 for this
