Bali players losing sight of fun
Dear Editor,
Well, summer is upon us and once again
ball players of every shape and size are
flooding the parks. From the very aggresive
fastball leagues to the recreational slow
pitch teams and even the very young T -ball
players there is a very healthy competitive
attitude.
Competition is great. Not only does it
prompt young people to strive to be the best
that they can be (and that doesn't stop in
sports) but it also teaches them discipline
and good sportsmanship. Or, at least, it
should.
The problem arises when coaches,
players, and umpires lose sight of the
ultimate goal...TO HAVE FUN.
I've been a great fan of the Men's Fastball
League in town for several years. I've
played everything from two -pitch to senior
'B' fastball for a total of 15 years and I was a
softball Canada Umpire for five years. And
now, a game I've always loved is leaving a
bad taste in my mouth.
The players and coaches have forgotten
the meaning of good sportsmanship and the
fans no longer come out to cheer on their
favorite teams, but instead to harass the
competition, and the umpires...well, we'll
get to them later.
I think the coaches and players of every
team in town should sit down and really
think about the whole ida of the game. Sure
everyone wants to win,but try to remember
that this is still a leisure activity and it
should he fun.
Softball is, for the most part, a non contact
sport. I would hope that any 'collisions' at "
home plate or any other base is the result of
aggressive playing and not the intent to
inj ure.
LETTERS
Fighting is a total lack of control and self-
discipline. Your opponents are usually
friends, neighbors, people you've known for
years. What ever happened to "it isn't
whether you win or lose, but how you play.
the game"?
There's a fine line between being a good
aggressive player and being a dirty player.
And I think several of the participants of the
game have crossed the line.
The umpires are the people with the
thankless job of keeping order. When is the
last time any of you went out to watch a ball
game and couldn't remember who had
umpired it, when it was over?
More often than not it seems we can recall
the "grand standing" of an insecure official
better than the unbelievable triple play or
the fantastic catch executed by the players.
And there's -rarely a week goes by that
someone doesn't get thrown out of the
game! Granted there are times when
players or coaches should be told to go
home, but there are more cases where it is
totally unwarranted.
Fred Pierry, a retired Umpire in Chief of
Canada once told me you should try to never
throw anyone out of a game. If you're doing
your job properly, you'll keep everything
under control and the players won't giveyou
any, reason to toss them.
He went on to further simplify things for
me by saying, "When these young guys
come out here to play ball it's usually a night
out for the entire family. His wife packs up
the kids and comes along to cheer on "Dad".
Come join in
the celebration!

If you throw him out of the game, you've
ruined their whole evening...they've got
nothing to do and they have to -.go home."
Very basic, but straight to the point.
When an umpire make a decision he has to
stick by it. There will always be someone
who disagrees with his call, and when an
umpire reacts to "open your eyes!", with
"You're out of the game!" it's an open
admission that he made the wrong call and
doesn't like anyone questioning him. If you
don't like to have people yelling at you,
you're in the wrong profession.
The Goderich Umpires Association, on the
whole is or has been one of the best I've
seen. However, I have to question their
integrity when they send new umpires out,
with no or little actual experience, to do
games at the same $13 per game rate as the
seasoned veterans.
It's great to see some new people,
especially the younger ones, trying their
hand at umpiring and I take my hat off to
them. But wouldn't it make it a lot easier on
the umpires anct the teams' concerned if the
"rookies" were always scheduled, to work
with an experienced umpire at possibly $6 or
$7 a game? .
I, for one, would make a greater effort to
control my temper and give the new umpire
"a break" if he were to make a questionable
call. If the teams are expected to pay $26 a
game for umpires, they deserve the best
qualified people available, regardless of the
calibre of their league.
I didn't want this to sound like a lecture,
for I'm just as guilty as everyone else when
it comes to getting carried away in the heat
of the game. I was just hoping that this letter
would prompt a few people to take a good
look at themselves, their teams and' their
attitudes toward the game.
Let's all try to remember that it is a
"game" and we do it because it'S fun. After
all, the warm weather's here, LET'S PLAY
BALL!!
Sincerely,
Diane Mitchelmore
