Qpinion Reader is disappointed in council's response to windsurfing regatta Dear Editor, Recently I have become involved in the sport of Windsurfing - a fantastic pastime which benefits a person both mentally and physically. June 1 and 2 I attended a vvindsurfing regatta, sponsored by Goderich Windsurf- ing, and held at St. Christopher's Beach in Goderich. What a great way for any young person to spend.a weekend, by getting in- volved in attending a fun filled, sport oriented, regatta. I've never seen such an overwhelming response to this relatively new sport. As I strolled the boardwalk I saw the beauty of summer fun. People were playing volleyball and there was a lot of enthusiasm from all who were enjoying this very colorful sport. Almost every person I saw was an un- familiar face to Goderich. People I talked to had traveled here from as far away as LETTERS Thunder Bay, which made me realize that this regatta attracted outsiders to the town, and of course, created- stimulation to benefit tourism to the town of Goderich. 1 spent my whole weekend on the beach getting involved to help support this regatta. I never once saw any of the town council members showing their enthusiasm and support in this activity. Although, I must say that Eileen Palmer, (our mayor) was there Saturday morning to welcome and show interest to the Windsurfing en- thusiasts. Fresh donuts and coffee were donated for the windsurfing racers. In regards to last week's article, placed on the front page of the Signal -Star, I felt that Tory McDonald had been tried aridiioon- victed. The funny thing is she didn't even get to attend her own trial! I'm very disappointed in the negative response that some of the council members took, toward the overall successful Windsur- fing Regatta. May I also add the months of preparation and hard work to organize such an activity is certainly quite a task for any young business woman to accomplish. I'm even more disappointed that Reeve Worsen would use such a tactless choice of words during a reported council meeting. Reeve Worsell has taken a simple parking bylaw incident and related it to the riot act, which in my eyes disillusions the general public who read the Signal -Star. I agree fully with Mayor Palmer when she stated the regatta was excellent. I had a ter- rific time and hope that in the future all regattas are so successful. Virginia Such concerns about regatta need clarification Dear Editor, The concerns expressed by Goderich Council with regard to the vehicles parked, in a restricted area for our sailboard regatta on June 1 require some clarification. The vehicles in question were there main- ly for the safety of the board sailors (com- munications van) and to accommodate our sponsors and out-of-town organizers of the event. The three vehicles were all out-of- town commercial vehicles. Permission to hold the regatta was given by council. The courtesies extended to spon- sors and organizers including the parking of their vehicles were of my own initiative which I was confident council would have approved had they been aware ,of the pur- pose. My apologies for any inconvenience or embarrassment to any member of council as a result are sincerely extended. My thanks to Peter Spain for opening the flood gate and to councillors and other town officials who helped make the event an accident -free success. Sincerely, Tory McDonald Remarks by Reeve Worsen on. regatta offensive Dear editor, This letter is with regards to last week's article on the Goderich Windsurfing Regat- ta. In this article Councillor Worsell stated, "... it's about time we read the riot act to that little girl..." I found this statement not only offensive, but very unprofessional for a man in his position. That little girl (Miss McDonald) runs a business in .a growing sport that has brought "a large number of people to Goderich who have never been here before." ( Regatta article: Mayor Palmer). If Reeve Worsell wants results with regards to abiding by park by-laws, perhaps he should begin 'by treating in- dividuals with the respect they deserve. Sincerely, Theresa Osborn. Fireworks display planned for June 30 Dear Editor: The past couple of weeks you have kindly printed my information and verses pertain- ing to the fireworks display. This has great- ly helped in creating some interest and donations towards the cause. I thank you. This week there are only hard facts! No verses'or errors (intentional or otherwise). The Fireworks Display will take place on Sunday, June 30, at the South Pier, Goderich Harbour. The show will beginn, when the western sky has got dark enough to provide a suitable background - about 10:15 p.m. Here are the facts: ° 1. The display will be cancelled if it is rain- ing between 9 p.m. and 10:15 p.m. If this happens we shall postpone the display until Monday, July 1 at 10:15 p.m. 2. We expect a large crowd to gather and that means many, many vehicles. To avoid as much traffic congestion as possible I en- courage you to team up with friends or neighbours and take one vehicle to the beach or park rather than two or more. The police will untangle the traffic jams up from the beaches and parks as quickly as possible but the fewer the vehicles the better. If you are able to walk to the viewing -place I en - Volunteer your time and talent as a Guide leader Dear. Editor: After reading Mrs. Shand's letter in last week's paper, I felt compelled to add my thoughts. I too was •one of the leaders who went with 250 girls to join 5,000 at the Kit- chener Auditorium on June.1 for one of the finest shows I have ever seen. I too was subjected to the honor of waiting ' 1/ hours at McDonald's, only to find out they ran out of food - try and explain that to 20 Brownies! But most of all, out of these two opposite experiences, come the pride of how the children handled themselves - Girls Guides (brownies, ti utues and Pathfinders) ut Goderich, you should be very) proud of yourselves. These girls were well behaved and a lot of fun to be with.. They definitely showed the true Guiding Spirit. If anyone in this community ever thought of volunteering their time and talents as a leader, do it now! We are short of leaders again for the following year and remember he rewards always outweigh the work. Come on the Guiding team; it's well worth it.
