The theme of the evening was "Sharing and Caring". The group was welcomed by Muriel Coultes, R.R. 5, Brussels, Presbyterial President and by Eleanor Hawkins, local U.C.W. President. Musical entertainment was provided by the junior choir of St. Mary's Church under the direction of Anita Ruthig. Mary Broughton, R.R. 2, Atwood, and Florence Skinner; R.R. 1, Mitchell, presented the book review of new books available. Helen Welch, President of Bruce Presbyterial was introduced. Alma Langford of Exeter introduced the first speaker of 'the evening, Bill Brady, founding president of Transplants Interna- tional. Brady said that thirty people had received new hearts since 1980 at University Hospital and because of the success of the transplant their quality of life is now great. He said it all depends on luck. Someone's bad luck and death means good luck and life to someone else. The most needed organ is the kidney and twelve hundred new patients in Canada go on dialysis each year. There are between five and six hundred kidneys donated each year with a waiting list between eight hun- dred and one thousand. He urged each one of us to make a commitment while we're still alive. We'll probably never have to honour the commitment unless the situation is just right but it is a real privilege to give the gift of life to someone. Margaret Engeland of Stratford introduc- ed the second speaker of the evening, Mrs. Barbara Hicks, of Clinton, who spoke on in- ner healing. She told us her life story and how she over6ame many difficulties by put- ting her faith in God. She urged us to share our faith and not be undercover Christians. Marjorie Johns of Exeter gave the courtesy remarks and the evening closed with an inspiring worship service led by Lois Haynes and Dorothy Grange of Auburn. Susan Howson of Blyth played the autoharp during the offering which is to be sent to the Mission and Service Fund of the United Church. w meNNEWS, Recently the Beta Theta Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi announced its executive for 1985-86. (photo by Diann Kellestine ) Unlimited Potentiai is thyme of WI convention "Women -Unlimited Potentials" is the theme for the tenth Triennial Convention of, the Federated Women's Institute of Canada (FWIC) to be held at the University of Western Ontario, London from June 16-20, 1985. Members will gather to exchange ideas, learn through discussions and dialogue about women's issues and decide where they stand to -day. Bernice Noblitt, FWIC President from Gloucester, Ontario will chair the Conven- tion. Also addressing the assembly will be Dr. Ellen McLean, President of Associated Country Women of the World(ACWW) from Eureka, Nova Scotia; Senator Martha Bielish from Alberta and Flora McDonald, MP from Kingston. At the closing banquet on Thursday, Dr. Pierre Turgeon from, 'University of Ottawa will be speaking on "Positive Thinking Under Stress and Strain". Federated Women's Institutes of Ontario, who are hosts for this convention, are coor- dinating the activities. Delegates will have the opportunity to 'attena workshops; to view displays set up by each of the 10 pro- vinces on the topic "WI Reaching Into the Community"; to purchase articles created by Ontario craftsmen; to register for bus tours to points of interest within southern Ontario and to take advantage of post con- vention tours to Toronto or Ottawa areas. Because Women's Institutes have such diversification, workshops will be a prime opportunity for members to become inform- ed about current women's issues. Each delegate may attend two workshops and can select from: Charter of Rights -How It af- fects Women; Quality of Life for Seniors; Effective Speaking -Expressing Yourself with Confidence; Child Care; Planning a Capsule Wardrobe; Child Abuse and Incest; Health Education; Water -Endangered Vital Commodity; Women -How to Protect Yourselves; The Family -Family Violence; Potential of Technology for Women; Microwave Cooking; Financial Management -Dollars and Sense; and Por- nography, Host families are needed for European students Canadian host families are being sought for 25 European high school students from Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Ger- many, Switzerland,. Great Britain, and Holland, for the 1985-1986 school year. The program is sponsored by ASSE Interna- tional.StudentExchrnge Programs (ASSE), a non-profit, public benefit, tax-exempt organization, affiliated with the Swedish and Finnish Ministries of Education and of- ficially designated by the U.S. Information Agency as an "exchange visitor program": Further, ASSE co-operates closely with the Provincial , Ministries of Education' in Canada. The European students, ages 16, 17,and 18 are fluent in English and are anxious to learn about Canadian culture by living with a family and attending a local high school. Students are thoroughly screened in Europe for outgoing personality, excellent academic performance and dedication to program goals. Each student is covered by comprehensive medical insurance and br- ings his/her own pocket money. The ASSE provides a volunteer represen- tative in the area to attend to the student's welfare and assist the host family with any problems which may occur= while their stu- dent is in residence. The program provides Canadian families with a great opportunity to learn about another culture and language, make new friendships both here and abroad while sharing their interests and values with a young person from another country., The students arrive in August 1985 and return home to Europe in late June 1986. Families interested in serving as hosts for the 1985-1986 school year should contact: Harry and Carol Helfenstein, R.R. 2, Teeswater, Ontario.
