Local fruit grower receives
BILD grant for
Twenty-nine more Ontario fruit and
vegetable growers and packers are receiv-
ing grants from the Board of Industrial
Leadership and Development (BILD).
Ontario Agriculture and Food Minister
Philip Andrewes said the $350,051 in grants,
made under the Ontario Storage and Pack-
ing Assistance Program, are incentives to
help growers and packers expand and
upgrade their operations. The recipients
have personally another $752,936 in the
various projects.

Goderich Township received $1,183 for apple
packing equipment. "This BILD initiative
helps stretch the marketing period for fresh
Ontario fruit and vegetables and helps
reduce imliorts," said Andrewes.

for co-ordinating Ontario's five-year, $1.5
billion economic development plan. It has

Centralia College has new
research farm near Exeter
The purchase of a 60 -hectare (150 -acre)
farm near Exeter will allow Centralia Col-
lege of Agricultural Technology to improve
its service to western Ontario, Agriculture
and Food Minister Philip Andrewes said to-
day.
The farm, located about two miles (three
kilometres) north of the college's Huron
Park campus, will be used for research,
testing and demonstrations, the minister
said.
The purchase will improve the efficiency
of the college's research programs by con-
solidating white bean, soybean, corn, canola
and °rutabaga testing in one superior loca-
tion," said Andrewes. The college has been
renting land which is not tile drained, while
the Perth and. Brookston clay loam soil of
the new site is fully tile drained.
New and unlicensed crop varieties for the
2,800 heat unit area will be evaluated at the
new farm. Varieties for the 2,600 heat unit
area will continue to be tested at the rented
site in the Br1rc.SPi.c arp•
Dr. J.C. Rennie, Assistant Deputy -
Minister of Technology and Field Services,
said the larger land area will allow for more
effective evaluation of new herbicides and
fertilizers through the rotation of test sites.
Drainage studies, proposed by the col-
lege's Agricultural Engineering Services as
part of the college's new research and
development mandate, will focus on finding
ways to reduce winter canola root blockage
of tile drains.
Work has already started on the layout of
research plot ranges for spring canola,
while early construction of an implement
shed and an agronomy field laboratory is
planned. Centralia college is one of five col-
leges of agricultural technology operated
across the province by the Ontario Ministry
of Agriculture and Food. Established in
1967, the college now has 325 full-time
diploma students enrolled in agricultural
business management; animal health
technology and food management courses.
