Diamond Jubilee tulip campaign remembers Dutch connection
This month as the Royal Canadian Legion
officially commences the observance of its
Diamond Jubilee one of the,, many programs
already initiated tomark the 60th birthday
of the Legion across Canada is the distribu-
tion of hybrid tulip bulbs by Legion Bran-
ches to their members and the general
public.
One reason the tulip was chosen as the liv-
ing symbol of the Legion's Diamond Jubilee
is the close comradeship which developed
between the World War TI Canadian ser-
vicemen and the citizens of Holland during
and following the liberation of their nation in
the spring of 1945. The final liberationoccur-
red on May, 5th 1945.
Even today, forty years later the Dutch
remember as noted by the recent
observances in Holland of the liberation of
their nation and the warm hospitality ex-
tended to those Canadian servicemen who
returned for these celebrations. It is a fact
today that the Dutch always make any
Canadian visiting the Netherlands most
welcome.
The Dutch are so grateful that they still
place flowers such as. tulips on, the
thousands of graves in Holland where Cana-
dian servicemen are buried.
Locally our Dutch Canadian citizens still
remember and on May 24 at 7:30 p.m. our
Dutch community wilt hold an Appreciation
Night with a dedication of the new fountain
in the park at the corner of Hamilton and
Victoria streets and a social evening to
follow at the. T,Pcion hall. All Dutch Cana-
dian citizens and members of the Legion are
invited to attend.
This year, as the Royal Canadian Legion
marks its Diamond Jubilee across Canada,
we are this month concluding our Jubilee
tulip project which will see tulip bulbs
brought over from Holland in September of
1985 so that they will bloom as tall fiery red
tulips in the spring of 1986.
Why not help the Legion and Canada to
remember our Dutch `connection' and those
Canadian servicemen who gave their lives
in the .liberation' of Holland by planting
Jubilee tulip bulbs in your garden or flower
bed next Septerhber? Then you"can join with
us in our Legion motto which is "We will
remember them".
To,order your Diamond Jubilee tulip bulbs
from Goderich Legion Branch 109 see our
tulip bulb advertisement in this week's edi-
tion of the Signal Star. Remember that the
deadline for Legion Branch 109 tulip bulb
orders is May 31st, of this year.
Huron Chapter works to educate public about epilepsy
On Saturday, May 25, the Goderich
Knights of Columbus will be hosting a
garage and bake sale at Suncoast Mall to
raise moeny for the Huron Chapter of
Epilepsy Ontario..
More than 400,000 Canadians suffer from
epilepsy, but it still remains a disorder
surrounded by misunderstanding and even
fear. '
For the first time last year, Canada's 32
affiliated branches launched the first Na-
tional Epilepsy Month in November to in-
crease public awareness about the disease
and to begin to educated Canadians about
some basic facts. The Huron Chapter of
Epilepsy Ontario is located at Box 1058;
Clinton Ontario.
The Huron Chapter of Epilepsy is a small
non-profit agency offering support services
to people with epilepsy, their families,
friends, teachers, employers etc.
The Huron Chapter of Epilepsy offers in-
dividual assistance for non-medical pro-
blems associated with epilepsy, such as ad-
justment difficulties, vocational assistance
needs, referral services to other agencies or
resources, and general information about
epilepsy.
An epilepsy awareness evening is held
periodically throughout the year where pro-
fessional guest lecturers discuss aspects of
interest to those who have epilepsy.
Everyone is welcome.!
Our parent group meetings are snecifical-
ly for parents of children with epilepsy. This
group meets to discuss raising the child with
epilepsy 'to be a well -adjusted and par-
ticipating member of the family and the
community.
A recreation and social group is for young
adults who have epilepsy. This group does
not meet often as a group per se, but rather,
individuals with specific recreation in-
terests are introduced to others with the
same type of interests. Suggestions and
assistance are provided to them to par-
ticipate in varied events occurring, in our
area.
The 'Huron Chapter is now offering a par-
ticipation group for young adults who have
epilepsy. This group will meet once a week
for five weeks. Atthe end of the five ses-
sions, members can join our on-going self-
help group. Groups will be many times
throughout the year.
The annual one -day epilepsy seminar is
held in London, in April. Guest speakers
discuss both the medical and social aspects
of epilepsy. This seminar is open to
everyone.
A newsletter is produced five times a year
and is sent to everyone on our mailing list.
The newsletter gives information about up-
coming events, summaries of recent presen-
tations ' about epilepsy and includes other
items of interest. .
An active public education programme is
provided by the Huron -Bruce -Perth
Chapter. Speakers will talk with any group
interested in epilepsy (schools, hospitals,
medical care facilities, service clubs, chur-
ches. etc.) . Presentations are geared to the
particular group in attendance.
• Epilepsy is not a disease and is not con-
tagious. It is a disorder of the brain caused
by a temporary generation of excess
electro -chemical energy inside brain cells.
• There is no single cause of epilepsy.
Epilepsy can be caused by a number of
events, such as birth trauma,or a severe
head injury, or the aftermath of a serious in-
fection such as meningitis or encephalitis.
• For 80 per cent of people with epilepsy,
medication can control their seizures.
