The liberation of Holland in 1945 from
German occupation during the Second
• World War is one area of Dutch history
which sticks in the mind of Bob Van Loo
of Clinton.
"The first thing I saw was a Dutch flag
on a factory which Was two miles from
our place. That was the first .real sign"
that the war was over, said Mr. Van Loo.
"A couple hours later we still saw Ger-
mans but they were more or less fleeing.
We were told that the Canadians were in
the village of Daarlevien.
"We went and met the Canadians.
They were driving through the streets
and we were climbing on the tanks. They
were giving out chocolates and cookies -
things we hadn't had in a long time."
Mr. Van Loo, a retired baker in Clin-
ton, remembers the many hardships dur-
ing the war, especially with the German
takeover of Holland. He said the Ger-
mans were always in the cities and
towns, looking for men to become part of
the work camps set up in Holland.
In one instance, which Mr. Van Loo

thousands of people from his home town
of Zwolle and made them work building
"tankfalls' so allied tanks couldn't get in-
to the city or gain entrance into Ger-
er two weeks of .building the
tankfalla, Mr. Van Loo decided one night
to flee the work camps and bicycle to his
parents, who had moved to Daarlevien.
"There was military on the road but
they didn't stop me. You could probably
say \I waslucky," he said,
From his parents' place, he went to a
farm to work which would lessen his
chances of being detected by the Ger-
mans. Moreover, his parents were In
danger as they were boring an elderly
Jewish couple in eir home from the
Germans. Mr. Va Loo said if his parents
had been detected they would have been
