Holland. TheldetOry of wind
ther country dates back *14 loth 46*--!
tury When they were used to carry excess
water away frOnl theecus land,
Winchnips were Holland's saying glue
in the fight for laud from the see. They
also served a vital industrial role and
were used to ..:grind wheat, 4W wood;
even grind snuff and spices.
By the middle of the 19th century some
9000 windiniils were in use in Holland.
Today fewer than 1,000 remain.
Modern technology made the windmill
obsolete and they were gradually replac-
ed by steam pumps. Now there are
modern diesel or electric pumping sta-
tions.
Of the remaining windmills in Holland
today, only a few hundred are still
workable. They do not operate out of
necessity, but as a symbol of affection
and pride in the past. ,..
That same pride has brought the great
wind machines across the ocean to
Canada. Today many Dutch immigrant
families display intricately crafted
miniature windmills on their properties.
The windmill, like the wooden shoe and
the tulip are all part of the old-fashioned
image of Holland. They may not repre-
sent the. modem technology and social
developments in the country today, but
they remain immportant aspects of
Holland's rich heritage.
