Several area core French students participated in a three-day
enrichment program Last week at Robertson Memorial Public
School. Classes were conducted entirely in French and the ;students
did everything from taping television commercials to illustrating
French learning textbooks for primary students. In the above
photo, Emma Hollingworth, Robertson, Beth MacDonald, Robert-
son, Shelley Adams and Kim Edward of Colborne Central School
put the final touches on their French textbook. Below, two students

Learning made
fun at school
Some of the top French students in Huron
County's elementary Schools had a taste of
total immersion at a special three-day
enrichment program at Robertson
Memorial Public School. •
The Grade 7 ar 18 stjidents, representing
the west area of the county, were part of an

The students, hind -picked for their profi-
ciency in the core French program, engaged
in group activities, games, songs, created
French television commercials and
authored books to be placed fn the school,
libarary for primary French students.
'Board of education French co-ordinator,
Damian Solomon, explained that the pro-
gram provided the students with an advanc-
ed enrichment program.
"They have come to know each other and
they have coped very well with classes in
total French," he said. "There was no need
to motivate the students. They picked up on
the language 'and are more proficient in
French."
The students chosen for the three-day
workshop showed a demonstrated interest
and good French communication skills.
Students from Robertson, Holmesville, Col-
borne and Brookside Public School par-
ticipated.
While students were immersed for three
days, Soloman suggested it would be fun to
do a full immersion program for a school
week. "The enrichment program provided
an extra opportunity for them td develop
language skills and they enjoyed it," he
said.
Foster parents wan

Being a foster parent is a tough fob. It's full-time. Twenty-four hours a
day. Often frustrating, and always demanding of your patience, energy
and love.
Yet despite its demands, or maybe because of them, thousands
of people take foster children into their homes each year.
Some are children, some are teenagers. Some have
)Special physical or emotional needs. But all have one thing
in common. They need a sense of place and security to
help them through a difficult period in their lives, and to
prepare them for reuniting with their families.
There's a very basic joy in sharing with a child or young
person some of the richness that life has given you.
As part of a team of social workers and other professionals,
you'll be helping foster children and their parents when they
need help most. And helping yourself at the same time, to
mature and grow as an individual.
if you'd like to learn more about becoming a foster parent,
contact your local Children's Aid Society or Family and Children's
Services.
It's not an easy task. Few john Ministry of Community

Sherry Talbot, a Grade 7 student at Col-

ing the experience allowed them " io do fun
things in French" adding that it "helped me
because it was learning and tun."

Besides taping commercials in French,
the students also authored and illustrated
special booklets that can be used by
students in primary grades. The books will
be placed in the Robertson School Library.
