Canada Health Day is May 12
Hospital, health unit play key role
Both the Alexandra Marine and General
Hospital and the Huron County Health Unit
welcome the public to visit their facilities
and ask about their programs this week and
next in celebration of Canada Health Day on
Sunday, May 12.
This year's theme, "Serving your health
needs" will be recognized by making the
public aware of what both organizations of-
fer the public. The event is sponsored by the
Canadian Hospital Association . and the
Canadian Public Health Association.
"Anyone is welcome to drop by our offices
at the court house this week and nest to ask
questions and get to know what we can do
for you," says Sheryl Gilbert, of the Huron
County Health Unit.
HURON COUNTY HEALTH UNIT,
New services offered by the Health 'Unit
include Culinary Hearts, a nutrition pro-
gram which starts this week. Also. provided
by the Nutrition Services department are
mass education programs related to Nutri-
tion Month and expertise and consultation
for the development of nutrition education
programs.
Another service is the Health Education
Service which provides consultation and
counselling for program development in
various . lifestyle health areas" iticluding'-
fitness, stress and smoking, liaison with
community health agencies, resource'
materials and organization of presentations
and speakers.
The Nursing Services incligle prenatal
classes, family planning clinics, home
visiting and counselling for individuals with
special needs, immunization clinics,. com-
municable disease control„ preschool and
• child health clinics, school health services,
adult health clinics, counselling and
assistance for groups with special needs and
liaison withhospitals, physicians and com-
munity agencies.
Home Care Services provides visiting pro-
fessional health care services to individuals
in their own homes for those recovering
from surgery, accidents or illness are those
who are in need of chronic care services. In-
cluded in the support services are part-time
homemaking, meals on wheels, dressings
and medical supplies, loaning of equipment,
diagnostic and laboratory services and
transportation. -
Health Inspection and Plumbing Services
involves active inspection and follow-up of
public health inspectors whP work to pre-
vent and control communicable disease and
promote a. healthy environment.
Included in the services are surveillance
of water supplies and swimming, food
sanitation inspection and education, en-
vironmental sanitation (inspection of
sewage systems, plumbing installationq,
recreational areas) and communicable
disease control.
Directing the Health Unit is the Medical
• Officer of Health, -Dr. Cieslar, who is respon-
sible for the health of the eni`ire community.
Al„EXANDRA MARINE AND GENERAL
HOSPITAL
With a staff of 136 full-time and. 144 full-
time employees, Alexandra Marine and
Cenral Hospital provides a wide variety of
services for the community.
The hospital has a total of 94 beds and the
Hydro favors line
through Huron County
The most westerly transmission line
route through Huron County is expected to
be Ontario Hydro's choice announced later
this month.
Wayne Caldwell, senior planner for
Huron County,. said that "unofficially" he
has been told the most westerly route,
through the townships of Ashfield, Col-
borne, Godericti, Stanley, Stephen and
Hay will be Hydro's preferred route from
the Brute Nuclear Power Development to
London.
The planner said the provincial utility is
expected to officially announce the prefer-
red Ml route within the next few weeks.
Sometime in early July, Hydro Will be
announcing which system it prefers, the
modified M3 version which has
transmission lines from Bruce to Essa and
then along the 401 to London or the route
through Huron Court;.
After that, environmental assessment
hearings, similar to the 'lues which took
place in Stratford in /982. will Lake place.
average length of stay in 1984 was 7.2 days in
medical, 4.2 in surgical and 3.0 in obstetrics.
Total admissions for 1984. was 2,078 with the
majority in medical and surgery,,
• Services provided include physiotherapy,
occupational therapy, social work,
discharge planning, dietary counselling,
hair dressing, gift shop, •psychiatric
counselling, psychology counselling,
radiology, laboratory, otolaryngology out-
patient clinic, orthopaedic outpatient clinic,
full emergency department service, am-
bulance service, pharmacy for inpatients,
palliative care program and candystripper
program.
The hospital is operated by a board of
directors of 20 and the board committees in-
clude a management .cormnittee, property
committee, public relations committee,
joint conference committee, finance com-
mittee and by-law review committee.
The hospital is accredited, by the .Cana-
dian Council on Hospital Accreditation.
