History isrepeated as a replica of one of the first licenced homebuilt planes in Canada is flown twenty-seven years later. This time it is a radio -controlled model of the famed "Bits and Pieces" originally built and flown by Gus Chisholm of Goderich in 1958. In the early '50's, the late Keith Hopkinson was instrumental in gritting approval from the Department of Transport` to allow air- craft to be built. and flown by individuals with a keen desire to do it on their own. Hopkinson was, internationally known in aviation circles and his technical knowledge was constantly reyuestea uy personnel on both sides of the border. Gus Chisholm, along with others, helped "Hoppy" build the first licenced home -built aircraft in Canada, a low wing "Stits Playboy" which flew exceptionally well for many years and is now in the museum in Ot- tawa. "Bits and Pieces" was completed in 1958 and was flown to many air shows in Canada and the U.S. and received workmanship awards and trophies for many years. An open cockpit was not the best medicine for an aging pilot with a little arthritis so the plane was sold to a man in Stratford, On- tario. It has since been resold to a resident of Bancroft, Ontario and after refurbishing, will be flying again very soon. The model was built by Ron Sharp of Florence, Ontario, exactly to scale, and flies very well. The builder took almostt, a year to construct the model and has been in con- stant 'touch with Gusre technical data to in- sure perfection. Chisholm says the first look at the model . brought back thousands ofmemories, of many years of fun flying around the coun- try.
