From the monlent the eur..tains' parted at the top of the show.tmtil the closing lines of Mine's at the concl►ision, we were witnesses to the trials arid'tribulations of the Franks, Van 'Deans and Mr. Dussel who were hiding • -from the Nazis in war-torn 1940's Amsterdam. We, the audience, forgot that the actors and actresses appearing onstage were aur friends and neighbours. They were the Franks, Van Daans, Mr. Dussel, Mr. Kraler and Miep. It was an ensemble cast acting together, being caught up in their roles and bringing across to the audience the feelings that these were real people and not merely characters in a paper script. To single out one performer, I would detract from the essence of ensemble acting. Each actor was a part of an Acting vehicle and without each part, the vehicle would have greund to a halt. I am pleased to say that, at the two per- formances I saw, it never did. For amateur actors to undertake their roles with this determination and integrity, I applaud their professionalism. ' Now, I must come to the point of this let- ter, Many dimes in the past, a member of the editorial staff of The Signal -Star has at- tempted to critique a Goderich Little Theatre production. In Most cases, he/she has failed miserably. Being afaraid to. tread on tender egos, glowing remarks have been made concerning some performances which in fact needed to be criticized. These criticisms need not always be negative but a few well-placed suggestions could make a Thp .neer ,for. fowls still exis t8, iopa Dear editor: The need is.still there in Ethiopia. After a very successful campaign for donations by several agencies, the funds have slowed to a trickle, probably in direct relationship to the amount of T.V. coverage. Rain is now falling in parts of Ethiopia. These rains, lasting only a few days, precede the rainy season. in June. Right now, it is urgent that people terrace the par- ched land so it will be able to hold the rain- fall. Crops need to be planted, and the famine cycle broken. Until those crops are harvested, however, millions must continue to eat. The people from the provinces of Eritrea and Tigre are suffering not only from the drought but also fromtile -'qp tinu- ing war which has blocked aid from most Ethiopian government sources.: As a result, death rates there have been among the highest in Ethiopia. , We urge those that are in a position to help to remember the pictures shown en televi- sion a few months ago and once again for- ward support. Donations can be made to Oxfam -Canada, c/o Standard Trust, Box 295, Goderich, NSA 3Z2. Yours truly, Pete Shephard Oxfam -Coordinator Reader offers explanation from Scripture passage Dear editor, "They had heard that Jesus had risen." "Jesus then takes the time , to explain to them from the Scriptures in order that they might more fully comprehend..." These words appeared in your article under the head of RELIGION in your issue of May 1. How had 'they heard'? .May I explain from the Scriptures in order that readers "might more fully comprehend the whole situation and all of its implications?" John 20, verse 17, in the. King James ver- sion which has been available in English for 374 years, tells -us: "Jesus saith unto her (Mary) Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father; but go to my brethren, and say unto them, 'I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God." Sincerely yours, C.F. Barney Red Cross Campaign set to go May 21 Dear editor, During the week of May 21 - 26, 1985, the Maple Leaf Chapter of the I.O.D.E. will be canvassing the homes and businesses throughout Goderich on behalf of the Cana- dian Red Cross Society. The people of Goderich have always been strong supporters of Red Cross and with good reason. The Society is a voluntary not for profit organization, dedicated to the relief of human suffering and distress, whenever and wherever it occurs. $5416.53 was raised in 1984. Even 'though we don't have a local Branch 'of the Red Cross here in Goderich, we cer- tainly do receive bepefits from this wonder- ful organization. In 1984 our local hospital received approximately 350 units of red cells for transfusion purposes, to the Society this service represents a collection, process- ing and • distribution cost of approximately $15.750. As you know, the Canadian Red Cross is also involved in the massive relief operation in Africa where , 150 million lives are adversely affected by the drought sweeping through and expanding the Sahel region. The Society's ability to serve is totally dependent on the people it serves. People like you. The need for support is obvious, the value unquestionable. Red Cross needs assistance today in order to respond to the call for help tomorrow. When the official Red Cross canvasser ap- proaches you, please help keep Red Cross Ready by giving a generous tax deductible contribution. Sincerely yours, Linda Murphy Red Cross Campaign Coordinator Girl Guides plan gala celebration for 75th birthday party June 1- - Dear editor, Girl Guides of Canada are celebrating their 75th birthday this year and local girls will join in the fun at a giant Anniversary Rally un June 1st. Buy a carnation and show MS sufferers you really care Dear editor, Multiple Sclerosis Society volunteers are saying, '`Make a donation....wear a carna- tion" as they launch the annual Carnation Day campaign in Goderich this week. The volunteers will be offering the carna- tion to the public on street corners and shop- ping malls on May 10th and llth. Multiple Sclerosis is a potentially crippl- ing disease of the central nervous system af- fecting many Canadians. It is the most com- mon neurological disease. As yet, there is no way to prevent the disease, and no cure, though various treatments are sometimes effective in controlling certain symptoms and placing MS in remission. To volunteer please contact Auleen Theriault at 4-2875 or Diane Mack at 4-2048. Moms are special so buy her a carnation for mother's Day and show her you care. And show us MS patients you care too. "rte Thank you, Auleen Theriault la&lustre performance glow with pcpmise. If the actors are to &Tot with confidence, praise nod criticism Should appear in these critiques. In Susan Hunde rlt's "criti- que" of "Anne", she neglected to mention some very fine acting. If Hundertmark is going to mention four or five members of a cast of ten, where does that leave the others? Should they not be mentioned ss well? They were working together. Also, a critic should not retell the whole story. It is no wonder that The Goderich Lit- tle. Theatre subscriptions are dwindling. No one has to see a play anymore -wait for the next week's Signal -Star -you will find out the story and who played which part. Does person have to become the eyes and ears of others? The Goderich Little Theatre is an ex- cellentamateur theatre group with the em- phasis on amateur. These people are actors, actresses and crew persons as a hobby, a hobby which demands as much time and energy if not more than that of a profes- sional company. Should more effort be taken in the Signal -Star's coverage of The Goderich Little Theatre? Perhaps a more theatre. riented critic could he found for these critiques? As a reader, who has been associated with The Goderich Little Theatre for several years, I have been very°disappointed by not only Hundertmark's but other's comments. Can something be done? By the way, what did you think of the sound effects, lighting and set? . Ann E.
