The returning office showed there were 38,390 eligible voters in the riding. Of the 27,700 (72 per cent) who cast their ballots Thursday and during last week's advance polls, 17,148 (62 per cent) voted for Liberal incumbent Murray Elston, Progressive Conservative candidate Mike Snobelen at- tracted 8,5121 votes (31 per cent) and NDP candidate Norma Peterson earned 2,031 votes (7 per cent). A total of 26,083 voted in tha 1981 provin- cial election. Mr. Elston won all but five of 138 polls and four of the five advance polls. The Wingham lawyer led the advance polis in Wifgham, Port Elgin, Blyth and the returning office while Mr. Spobelen had the most votes at the advance poll in Kincardine. Mr. Elston came out on top m his place of voting in Wingham, gaining 153 votes, IVir. Snobelen, 29, and Mrs. Peterson, 9. Mrs. Peterson also won her own area ( the Huron Heights region of Kincardine), earn- ing 65 votes, to Mr. Elston's 54 and Mr. Snobelen's 26. Mr. Snobelen lost his poll (southern Huron Township) to Mr. Elston's 99-92, Mrs. Peterson getting 6 votes at that poll. Peterson pleased with NDP showing By STEVE McALLISTER No sooner had Thursday's provincial elec- tion come to a close then NDP candidate Norma Peterson was ready to move on to other things, specifically Friday's meeting of Kincardine town council, where she is ' completing her first term as a councillor. Mrs: Peterson, running for the New Democratic Party in .the Huron -Bruce riding, picked up 2,031, votes Thursday. The NDP candidate in the 1981 election, Tony McQuail polled 1,979 votes, leaving Mrs. Peterson room for optimism over her show- ing. "Consideringwhat was happening, I think I did very well to increase, " said Mrs. Peterson Friday, citing the Liberal surge in this election. "It could have gone a lot worse." Anti -Miller feeling Mrs. Peterson credited the Liberal upswing with an increasing dislike of Premier Frank Miller during the campaign. She said the anti -Miller feeling made its way through the province. "I'm not surprised- that Murray (Elston) won but I didn't expect (that margin)," she said. "It reflected what happened across the province. Surprised by the voter turnout, saying there appeared to be a lack of interest in the election, Mrs, 'Peterson also attributed the large turnout to an anti -Miller sentiment and the power of polls. "With Miller's increasing, goofs, people decided enough was enough and voted to get rid of him. The Liberals were predicted to win and sometimes people vote on that basis." Mrs. Peterson said during her campaign the Liberals had taken many of the NDP's policies and she said Friday "that's fine as long as they continue to move in that direc- tion". The election also helped people realize that NDP leader Bob Rae is a "bonafide" leader, she added. -Asked''"about. -the -effect of d u,inu1 ity' government on the riding and province, Mrs. Peterson said "a minority government tends to be more accountable tothe people". She said she didn't know how it would affect , Mr. Elston's role at Queen's Park, saying she disagrees with a Tory theme that you don't have sit on the government side of the Tegs a ure o . e ane ec ry • w . The Kjncardine resident says she has an interest in running provincially again. Mrs. Peterson ran in last fall's federal election for the NDP in the Grey -Bruce riding, and she will seek a second term on town council in the municipal election this fall. Despite coming out third, Mrs. Peterson said she has learned a lot during the past month. "Even if you lose, it'soan educational ex- perience. You meet so many people, you benefit personally from the experience." County clerk hospitalized Huron County's etlerk-treasurer was kept in Mississauga General Hospital last week after experiencing a numbness in his left side while visiting in the city. Bill Hanly, in his mid -50's, was visiting his daughter in Mississauga when he woke up in the morning of Saturday, April, 27 with the numbness. Huron Warden Paul Steckle told the May 1 session of county council that Mr. Hanly has been in daily communication with the county offices and he is feeling fine.
