should permit the opposition leader the
chance to form a government, rather than
calling another election.
Premier Frank Miller has called the
provincial legislature back for May 27, a
decision revealed the night of the election.
By that time, the three party leaders should
have developed a tentative method .of
conducting the government.

By STEVE M.cAr !ASTER
It was an indication of things to coarse for
Mike Snobelen and the Progressive Con-
servative party in Ontario Thursday night
as a couple of Tory signs fell from the wall
'as Mr.. Snobelen's supporters gathered m
the hall at the Ripley -Huron Complex.
Liberal incumbent Murray Elston's 8,600 -
vote victory over Mr. -Snobelen, left more
than a fe PC supporters in the Huron -
Bruce ri r ' _ s umbfounded,
Mr. lston, *lacing Murray Gaunt,
defeated Tory can.I ate Gary Harron by
224 votes in 1981 and ; . ny observers were
predicting another cl t'se result Thursday
night. Mr. Elston won 133 of 138 polls,
however, including a seven -vote victory
over the PC candidate at Mr. Snobelen's
home poll:
"It was either Hogtown or the corn plant
and it looks like the corn plant," said Mr.
Snobelen to his supporters following the
election results. "There's always a winner
and always a loser, and we did our best."
Time for a change
Talking- to the press later, Mr. Snobelen
said when congratulating Mr. Elston in
Teeswater, he "appeared to be overwhelm-
ed by his victory". Several Snobelen sup-
porters agreed that Mr. Elston" was helped
by an anti-government feeling and a feeling
that it was time for a change after 42 years
of Tory government.
"They were probably looking for a
change, like the federal election, but I'm
quite surprised with this riding;" said Kin-
cardine Township reeve Weir Sheane.
"It was a straight anti-government vote
but I'd thought it be closer (in Huron -
Bruce)," echoed Kincardine .businessman
Don Miller. Mr. Miller thought both Mr..
Snobelen and Bruce -Grey Tory candidate
Arlene Wright would have secured more
votes. He credited Mr. Elston With running
a ,good campaign, adding that a minority
government may help the local riding.
i'Murray's a good guy and he has some.,
tools to work with now."
Loran- Peter, who nominated Mr.
Snobelen for the PC ticket in April, said
"Mike's got nothing to- be ashamed of. It's
pot a `support Liberal' vote,_ ,just for a

headquarters after election victory Thursday.
change. The organization in this riding did
as well as we could."
Mr. Peter said he wasn't sure how much
Frank Miller's presence influenced the
Snobelen campaign., "Mike made it clear he
wasn't supporting all the government
policies and that's the wait it should be," he
said.
Another election in 18 months
Grey -Bruce MP Dr. Gary Gurbin, who
said Thursday's results would make things
tougher for the Tories in Ottawa, predicted
another provincial election in 18 months.
When asked if he wodld run again Mr.
Snobelen said "you never know *lig I
)might do", adding that he would return to
his position as chairman of the Bruce Coun-
ty board of education yesterday.
Jim Bradley, a Snobelen backer who
became a leading orator for the Tories here
in the weeks leading to the election, told the
crowd Mr. Snobelen would be back.
"If any of you think Mike Snobelen is
politically dead, you better get another idea
in youvhead," said the Ashfield Township
farmer. "Mike will be back and we'll rise
again. Maybe people have spoken and we
can take notice and pull up our socks."
Mr. Bradley provided some humor at the
Tory gathering Thursday night while being
jokingly chided by PC association president
Barb Fisher for wearing a red tie. Mrs.
Fisher took the tie and then presented Mr.
Bradley with a pair of red striped boxer
shorts.
"I was going to wear this tie to a Liberal
funeral this weekend but I guess there's
nothing wrong with looking good in your own
casket," joked Mr, Bradley.
