Deborah and kids
swinging together
Toronto performer Deborah Dunleavy performed her "Swinging
Together" routine for children at three local public schools last
week. Dunleavy's show got the audiences involved in her act with
familiar and original folk songs, mime routines and other ac-
tivities. The show was sponsored by the Goderich Recreation
Department as part of their April Children and Youth Cultural
Festival. ( photo by Patrick Raftis )
Students enjoy "Swinging Together"
with Toronto children's performer
Deborah Dunleavy was on stage, playing
to an audience of students at Victoria
School and the children weren't sure quite
what to expect.
Silently, moving 'with the exagerated
gestures of a mime, the performer unpack-
ed a noti-descript * tar case, 'tel?ftovmg
first a towel, thena standard acoustic
guitar. Giving the instrument a quizzical
look, she attempted, much to the delight of
her audience, to blow into the end' of it. The
children laughed while Dunleavy tried
several methods of making music with the
item, before hitting upon the idea of strum-
ming
trumming it with her fingers.
By this time, both the audience and the
performer were into tlae act and the stage
was set for "Swinging Together".
Dunleavy, a Toronto-based children's
performer, specializing in drama and
music for libraries, schools and communi-
ty programs, was brought to Goderich, as
part of the local Recreation Department's
Children and Youth Cultural Festival. She
gave her "Swinging Together" program
FEATURE
REPORT
for children in Grades Kindergarten to 3,
at St. Marys and Victoria Schools, on 11
Wednesday, Apr. 17.
"Swinging Together" is one of several
acts in. Dunleavy's repertoire. It involves
familiar folk songs, swing tunes and
original compositions; combined with
creative movement, plus vocal and
rythmic participation by her audiences.
"It's basically an acoustic perfor-
mance," says Dunleavy..
Although currently • into children's
shows, Dunleavy has been working since
1972 as a professional singer -guitarist and
composer. She has written music for
theatre productions and recently perform-
ed at Roy Thompson Hall on behalf of the
Children's Aid Society. She has toured ex-
tensively through Labrador and appeared
on several well-known television shows, in-
cluding CBS's Morningside.
Training in mime, voice, jazz dance and
acting, plus degrees in English and drama,
, give Dunleavy an extensive background to
draw from in her work.
Although her programs range from con-
certs for children to workshops for
teachers Dunleavy says she enjoys work-
ing with primary school children. best of
all.
