Hospital Board slams Health Ministry The provincial government is leaving Ontario' hospitals in a state of financial limbo by delaying the announcement of an- nual funding increases until after the May, 2 election, members of the Alexandra Marine and General Hospital Board have charged. In past years, the board has known what kind of increase it could expect from the Provincial Ministry of Health by early April. But, this year the board has not yet heard, and some members of the board feel the government is holding back until after the provincial election. Recently announced figures have pegg- ed the ministry's overall increase to On- tario hospitalsyf_or the coming fiscal year at 6.7 per cent. however, local hospital Ad- ministrator Ken Engelstad pointed out this c TT l ALL POINTS REALTY INC. The hospital has already learned it will not be receiving an increase based on in- creased volume, even though the hospital was busier in the past fiscal year than in the 'previous one, because in their base year (1981-82) their activity rate was higher than at present. "We really haven't been told what our allocation will be," said Engelstad. "If there had not been an election, they would have made the allocation by now," said Vice -Chairman David Gower. The uncertainty of the funding increase caused some confusion among board members during a discussion of how to use a surplus, left over from the 1984-85 operating budget. hospitals, plus hikes for increased volume at individual hospitals and allocations for research. "It does not mean we'll get 6.7 (per cent)," said Engelstad,.whsi :addedthaat he did not expect to hear about the Goderich hospital's individual allocation increase until after May 2. "If it's good news, we'll hear before May 2," said Dr. Michael Conlon, hospital chief of staff. "What are we supposed to do, stay in Limbo until then," asked board member Pat Osborn. "That's what every hospital in Ontario is doing," replied Engelstad. Provincial Minister of Health Alan Pope will be visiting the Goderich Hospital on Wednesday, April 24 (today) and Osborn suggested the minister be asked about the allocation at that time Goderich Council votes itself a raise pay 5 YEARS AGO For the first time in three years, Goderich Town Council voted itself a raise. At Mon- day night's session council agreed to an eight per cent pay hike for all councillors in a recorded vote. The last raise for council was in April 1977, when it voted itself a six per cent increase. The Goderich Police Commission handed down two directives, to Police Chief Pat King'when it met Last Thursday - one con- cerning drycleaning ant the other concern- ing foot patrol. The chief was instructed to have his men patrol The Square on foot more often. It was felt this would be good for public relations and also save on gas. FARMS FOR SALE HULLETT TWP.
