Esso's Thankful - Tankful raises
funds for Easter Seal Campaign
The Easter Seal Campaign will get some
needed fuel of the monetary variety as the
Goderich Esso Centre participates in the
nation-wide Thankful Tankful program
Saturday.
Anyone filling up with gas at the Esso
Centre on Victoria Road Saturday will con-
tribute to the Easter Seal campaign as
Goderich Esso will donate one cent for
every litre of gas sppld. The parent com-
pany will match the focal donation.
While the dealership is normally self -
serve, members of the Goderich Lions
Club will be on the premises to handle gas -
pumping chores from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Patrons can also purchase fountain pop,
with the proceeds -from the sale also going
to Easter Seals.' There will also be free
balloons for children.
Esso Centre staff have donated their
time for the one -day Thankful -Tankful
blitz.

will raise
monitoring
awareness
Pharmacist Mark Aitken is hosting a
Diabetes Day at Rieck Pharmacy on May
30.
This event is designed to raise • wareness
among diabetics of self blood glucose •
monitoring as a method of control at home,
at work, or on vacation. Using self blood
glucose monitoring techniques, diabetics
can regularly monitor their blood .glucose
levels, and under the guidance of their
physician, use the test results to adjust their
food, exercise and medication, to keep their
blood sugar levels within required limits.
Among the activities taking place during
Diabetes Day will be a film on self blood
glucose monitoring, demonstrations of
blood glucose testing and free literature on
diabetes.
Continuous demonstrations of self blood
glucose monitoring, using the Glucometer
Reflectance Photometer will be performed
by Mark Aitken and Doug Kuzyk, Ames
Division representative.
The Glucometer, the leading blood
glucose meter in Canada, is a portable, easy
to use, battery -powered meter. It is used in
conjunction with Dextrostix reagent strips
to allow a blood glucose level reading in less
than two minutes.
The importance of home blood glucose
monitoring is being stressed in the treat-
ment of diabetes, and physicians are anx-
ious to involve their patients in the manage-
ment of their condition. Until the advent of
the Ames Glucometer, the only convenient
tools available to the diabetic for a health
management program were less reliable
urine testing products.
"Diabetes 'Day will be of interest to
diabetics of all ages", says Mark Aitken,
"as well as parents of children with the con-
dition. Diabetics who have been uncertain
how self blood glucose monitoring can assist
their personal situation will find the event of
particular value."
Sponsored by the Ames Educational In-
stitute, Diabetes Day is being held at Rieck
Pharmacy, 14 The Square, Goderich, On-
tario N7A 1M3, the area's authorized Ames
Self Testing Centre. Each of the Self Testing
Centres are part of a Canada -wide network,
staffed with fully qualified personnel who
Can instruct diabetics. in the techniques of
self blood glucose monitoring.
All visitors to Diabetes Day will be eligi-
ble to win a free Glucometer, the winner of
which will require physician approval.
Pope to visit
Provincial Minister of Health Alan Pope
will be visiting the local hospital Wednes-
day ( today ). During the visit, Pope will
meet with Administrator Ken Engelstad
and board Chairman Bob Dempsey and
will tour the hospital.
