The Goderich Signal-Star, 1985-04-24, Page 5as it 11`I,'T' ;ti polisfioN ter opposes separate school funding ( • Dear editor, Fortner Pi'eirniol' Bill Davis, in his .state• m nt to, the Legislature in June 1984 ' pro - sed to fully fund the Roman Catholic pro- ' sed at a costf to Ontario's o millions of dollars taxpayers. This decision was made without any consultation of the cittiizens. of Ontario who, regardless. of ..fait i or background, will be expected to support one religious group to the exclusion of all others. It is possible that such a move will frag- ment the Province's public school system, should other religious and private schools request their fair share of the tax dollar too! ting they have/ no intention of taking non- Catholics. Similarly, he top t that Catholic LETTERS School Boards will stop turning away employees - from teachers to secretaries or janitors - because, they aren't Roman Catholic. Itis my feeling that no one should be forc- ed oreed to support another's religion and I am op- posed to our government usingpublicfunds to fully finance the Roman Catholic Separate School System. According to Bill Phillips, Chairman of East Y.ork's. Board of Education, the Roman. Why not call it "The Oct" not Square Dear editor, • I am mystified. Ever since coming to Goderich I have been fascinated and puzzl- ed about the meaning and naming of the central core of town. I am referring of course to The Square. Now I don't mean to be a fusspot but I was always taught that- a square was a parallelogram having four equal sides and four right angles. My assnriat 's Mr. Funk, Mr. Wagnall and Mr. Webster also agree on this and their definitions and English is a darn sight better then mine. Now, on the very odd occasion, it has hap- pened that I have been known to be a little off the mark, but for the life of me, every time I do a lap uptown, I come up with eight 'sides of equal distance or what is called an octagon. How can this be? Surely I can't be the first person to have observed this and' Laird should stay. on ,The Square reader says Dear editor, It would seem a shame that just because of one complaint from a Goderich bank that a local landmark such as Laird's Chip Wagon be forced to move from the location it has traditionally occupied for more years than I can remember. I think with the unemployment situation as it is we would be more supportive of young people going into business. Our town fathers should help in any way possible. I nersonafly think l,airrl has on not of his way to keep things tidy on his corner and his product is very good. There must be other ways of correcting this problem if there is a problem. Don't just attack the small business people. They have to live too. Small business and free enter- prise is the backbone of,Goderich and Huron County. An Interested Citizen J.A. MacDonald Sale of beer at corner storeA would contribute torobl p em To the editor, In prqposing the sale of wipe and beer in Ontario grocery stores, Liberal Leader David Peterson is 'ignoring vital research conducted by the Addiction Research Foun- dation of Ontario. A 1981 Addiction Research Foundation study found that such expansion of current outlets would result in increased alcohol consumption, adding between 2,650 and 14,260 more heavy drinkers to Ontario's population. Alcohol, already our number one public health problem accounts for one in every 10 deaths and half of all traffic fatalities: Can society tolerate an increase in alcohol abuse because of a poorly conceived political notion? Sincerely, Karl N. Burden, Executive Director Rotary Music Festival will feature area talent Dear editor, We are writing to enclose some details of upcoming performances by young people from your area in t e 4th annual Midwestern Ontario Hota Music Festival beeld in Walkerton from Mon., April 29 thigh Sat., May 4. .
