Harry Ellis Dickson will conduct
Orchestra London in symphony
The Goderich Rotary Clubpresents
another in its series of concerts with Or-
chestra London Canada Saturday, April 20
at Goderich and District Collegiate In-
stitute.
Guest conductor for Pops III will be
renowned Associate Conductor of the Boston
Pops, Harry Ellis Dickson. The program
will move through a tribute , to Arthur
Fiedler of the Pops and favorite selections
from My Fair Lady and Girl Crazy.
The Pops III concert will conclude with a
rousing rendition of Sousa's The Stars and
Stripes Forever. •
Harry Ellis Dickson is the founder,
Artistic Director, and Conductor of the
Boston Symphony Youth Concerts, as well
as a member of the Boston Symphony
Orchestra's first violin section. Mr. Dickson
was named Associate Conductor of the
Boston Pops Orchestra in January, 1980.
A native of Cambridge, Massachusetts,
Mr, Dickson is a graduate of Somerville
High School and the New England
Conservatory of Music. He studied violin for
two years with Carl Flesch and Max Rostal
as, a fellowship student at Berlin's.
Hochschule fur Musik and later studied
conducting with Pierre Monteux at the
Domain School in Maine. Mr. Dickson was
active both as .conductor and violinist before
joining the Boston Symphony under Serge
Koussevitzky in 1938.
Mr. Dickson is the distinguishedTecipient
of numerous' awards. He is a Chevalier in
the "Ordre des Arts et des Lettres" of the
French government, and "in 1971 the
National Conference of the Humanities
presented him a Certificate of Honor
recognizing his distinguished contributions
to the humanities. He holds, honorary
degrees from' Boston's Berklee College of
Music, from Curry College, and from North
Adams State College in Massachusetts.,
In September, 1975, the city of Somerville
dedicated the Harry Ellis Dickson Centre of
Fine Arts and Humanities in its new Winter
Hill Community School.
An ardent collector of anecdotes about
music and musicians, Mr. Dickson has
incorporated many of them into his book,
Gentlemen, More Dolce • Please! an
entertaining view of music behind the
scenes. He recently completed a book about
Arthur Fiedler.,entitled, Arthur Fiedler and
the Boston Pops. In addition, he has
furthered the part-time conducting career of
his close friend Danny Kaye, with whom he
has travelled to many countries of the world

transferred.
The Huron County Board of Education
approved the transfers at its April
meeting.
Exeter public school vice-principal
Larry Black will be going to Vanastra,
Public School. -
Niall Straw, a teacher at Usborne Public
School will become vice-principal at Ex-
eter Public School.
Louise Wilson, teacher at Victoria
Public School in Goderich will become the
vice-principal at Robertson Memorial
Public School in Goderich.
All appointments are effective Sept. 1. '

HARRY ELLIS DICKSON
as musical mentor.
Mr. Dickson's association with the Boston
Pops dates from 1938; he became assistant
conductor of that orchestra in 1958. In 1975,
and again in 1983, Mr. Dickson conducted
the Pops at the inaugural" ceremony of his
son-in-law, Governor Michael Dukakis. The
Boston Symphony Youth Concerts were
instituted in 1959, and for his work as the
director and conductor of those concerts,
Mr. Dickson has been described as "that
rare soul, an adult who remembers what it
was like to be young, who loves young people
and understands them, and who wishes to
share with them that magic kingdom of the
mind where music is the key."

clinic at G.D.C.I. beginning at 2 p.m. -
MacKay Centre for. Seniors will hold its
weekly card party at 8 p.m. - Dungannon
Senior Citizens will hold its weekly euchre
games at the seniors' centre at 8 p.m. Cost is
$1 per person and ladies should bring lunch.
FRIDAY," APRIL 12:- MacKay Centre for
Seniors will hold potluck dinner and movie
beginning at 12:30 p.m. There will also be a
dance at 8 p.m. the same evening.
The Huron County Science Fair will be held
at Exeter Public School April 12 and 13 for
students age 12 to 19. Exhibits will be on
display. Chairman is David Medd, 357-2960.
SATURDAY, APRIL 13 - Euchre tourna-
ment at Dungannon Agricultural Hall.
Registration -from 1-2 p.m. Admission $3.
MONDAY, APRIL 15 - Friends of the
Library presents the Heritage of Ontario in
the days of Upper Canada and the United
Empire Loyalists, a presentation by Barry.
Page beginning at 8 p.m. at the Goderich
Public Library.
