GODERICH SIGNAL STAR, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 10, 1985—PAGE 11 Work of Bill Acres featured at Blytti Festival Gallery - in' Aril An exhibition of works by the late Bill Acres opened last week at the Blyth Festival's Art Gallery. A residenf of Gowanstown until his recent death, Bill Acres is best known as an abstract expressionist painter - a creator of bold, bright, large canvasses with primary colours dominating,.However, there is a` vast body of pen anff ink, and conte sketches as well as poetry that also boldly proclaims Acres' interpretation of the human journey. In all of Acres' imagery, there is a vigorous declaration that "we are at war, bloody war", but also that individualism and courage in the human spirit can and must prevail over defeatist and destructive forces. In the works in this exhibition, the face and human figure are abstracted in a search to discover and to present the vigour and the truth, eontained.in the forms, and ultimately in the human spirit. The self-portrait, somewhat out of fashion today, was for Bill Acresaa necessary vehicle for the artist to use in order to come to terms with who he is and what he is doing. Acres believed that the artist's job is to examine fully sand to express truthfully both the negative and the positive in human experience; the artist himself is the primary subject available to the artist for examination. The Art Gallery, located in the Bax Office at the Blyth Memorial Hall, is open Monday to Friday,,from 9 a.m. to 5 pan. This special exhibition of Bill Acres' work will remain on display throughout the month of April. There is no admission charge and all are welcome.
