Acid rain must be stopped, n studied to death Ferraro: says BY STEP IANIE LEVESQUE Acid rain needs to be stopped not studied to death says Geraldine Ferraro, the first woman to be nominated for vice-president in the United States. Ms. Ferraro was the guest speaker at the $150 -a -plate Liberal fund raising dinner held in London on March 26. "Acid rain is being studied to death - to the death of our forests, our lakes, our soiL It does not need to .be studied further. It needs to be stopped," she said. The American Democrat said the North American problem needs a solution made by the entire continent. "I support the negotiation of a fair treaty between Canada and the United States to ad- dress this problem, and I also favor a pro- gram in my own country to match the Cana- dian commitment and reduce by one hal/ the American emissions that cause acid rain over the next 10 years." • Acid rain was not the only item of concern on Ms. Ferraro's mind.' She also talked about the American deficit, trade and arms control. While she said she is pleased that Presi- dent Ronald Reagan has reopened arms control discussions with the Soviets, she is worried that .the Reagan administration's refusalto;stop research on Star Wars during ' negotiations and to not discuss Star Wars in negotiations will result in °unsuccessful talks. "Now it is possible that a formula can be found to get around this apparent conflict... But if it turns out that by refusing ` to negotiate on Star Wars, which in my opinion is a very questionable and perhaps impossi- ble plan, the administration blocks progress on arms control for another four years, this would be a very serious blow to the cause of peace and security of NATO countries. "I°"deeply hope that whether with Star Wars or without it, the Reagan administra- tion pursues an armscontrol agreement with singleminded devotion. If they do, that effort will deserve and receive the support of Americans from both political parties." On trade, Ms. Ferraro said the United States should become more competitive in the world economy, rather than protecting its borders from other countries who want to 'trade with the U.S. "I do not think the answer to trade pro- blems lies in protection. But neither do I think that the United States can for long keep its doors open to' nations that close their markets to us," she said. The former vice-presidential candidate said the consensus in Washington is that the deficit has to come down, even if that means restraining spending in all areas, including defense, and possibly raising taxes. "Unfortunately in mycountry it is easier to win votes by attacking welfare than by Geraldine Ferraro, vice-presidential candidate in the 1984 election in the United States was the guest speaker at an Ontario Liberal Party $150 -a -plate fund-raising dinner in London on March 29. Here, speaking with Ms. Ferraro is Bruce McDonald, Liberal candidate in last year's federal election. In the background is Joan Smith, provincial Liberal candidate for London. (Stephanie Levesque photo) facing reality. And for a long time that is what politicians did," said Ms. Ferraro. The American politician received the most applause from the Canadian Liberals, particularly women when she talked about the reaction in her country • to the first woman vice-presidential candidate. "On the whole in the United States we already think of ourselves as a fair and open society. And so no one really expected to be touched by -this sort of a decision. But, much to -their surprise, millions of Americans • were. "Now I knew that all these people, and many more, were not moved by Geraldine Ferraro. Many women could have done what I did. I was allowed to stand in for millions of American women. In fact, that's what made it so hard for me. I knew that many were watching me. Most people were. rooting for me. And I didn't want to let them down." Although theWalter Mondale-Ferraro ticket did not win in the 'United States presidential campaign, Ms. Ferraro said horizons for women were lengthened, which was a win for women. There were about 450 Ontario Liberals to hear Ms. Ferraro arid Ontario Liberal leader David Peterson. - 4-H. programs stress. leadership BY KAREN RODMAN The 4-H program is one of the best ways to . develop the skills and talents of youth. Has anyone ever come up to you and said "you have some real good leadership poten- tial", and yet you did not know what they meant. This is sometimes the case as we are all born with certain leadership skills and the remainder waiting to be tapped. The On- tario 4-H program provides many oppor- tunities for people to work together in an at- mosphere of fun and learning so as to develop leadership potential. With the average 9-H metnber being 14.5 years of age, the program is ideal for putting leader- ship into action. Every 4-H project, whether it be "dairy" or "actionwear" provides leadership oppor- tunities for members and leaders. At the club level, it can range from taking an ex- ecutive position in your club, introducing a guest speaker at a regular meeting, or working with fellow members to put on a demonstration. At the local fair, 4-H members and leaders exhibit leadership to the public displaying the project work of the members in a very educational manner. The real test of one's leadership capability comes about when you get involved in plann- ing or chairing a portion of the achievement day program. Regional Conference for 4-H members 15 years of age fit the bill each summer for ap- proximately 1,000 youth. A 3 -day program of -general interest--sessien&, skill building—e ercises and social recreation is designed to make members more aware of their leader- ship and communication potential in life. 4- H members from Huron County will be at- tending the 1985 4-H Regional Conference at Centralia College in August. vincial 4-H Leadership Camp which is held each March and June. Enthusiasm, energy and desire to try new things are the essen- tial ingredients required. One hundred 4-H members from across the province make up a ' very dynamic group of individuals who discover the true meaning of leadership by experiencing it to the fullest. Five 4-H members have just returned from the March Camp. They are Kate Boon, R.R. 2, Bluevale; Sandra Shelley, R.R. 2, Gorrie; Murray Rundle, R.R. 1, Centralia; Dave Van Beers, R.R. 1, Blyth; and Diane Willis, R.R. 1, Kirkton. Reports from these delegates are good. Sandra says, "if you have the opportunity to go to Leadership Camp - go! You will have a lot of fun, learn a lot about 4-H and leadership, and make new friends." While Murray Rundle sa jos, "each of us left camp with memories that will be etched in our minds for the rest of our lives. Thanks for a super week! ". 4-H member, Diane Willis, says she "is sure that she will take everything she learned at camp and in- corporate it into her life". And David Van Beers says that Leadership Camp is the "best way to develop leadership skills, to learn more about yourself and to work with others". A successful 4-H club leader also develops and matures in leadership by leading a pro- ject. However, to ensure that this is the case, seven 44 G91,1r Leader Regional Con- ferences were held across the province in February 1985. The theme of the Con- ferences "4-H: A Search for Personal Ex- cellence" means that program focused on developing the . human resources of our If you are looking for the leadership ex- leaders. Being a 4-H club leader can be more than just providing a service to the com- munity when one understands the impor- tance of goal setting, time management, and effective communication: These topics along with the exchange of ideas constituted much of the conference program. Ron Shelley, Leader of the North Huron 4- H Swine Club was one leader who attended this conference relayed that guest speaker, Rosoline Wysocki said "Please don't bring me problems, please bring -me solutions'. Ron says that he had fun at the Conference and solved some of his problems too. Club leaders also have opportunity to ex- perience leadership within their coun- ty/district Leaders' Association. Within the Association, leaders are encouraged to take an executive position, chair a committee or at least be an active member of the Associa- tion by making an honest effort to assist in the direction, planning and evaluation of the county/district 4-H program. Leader Associations may be new to some, but the leadership potential they have to offer is not new. For further information regarding the operation of the Huron County 4-H Leaders' Association contact the President, Terry Smith, R.R. 1, Walton at 527-0979. As you can see, leadership opportunities exist every day for members and Iea rs alike. The leadership opportunities in 4-H today can .make you a leader in your community in the future. You have the potential within yourself and the 4-H program has the oppor- tunities to tap that potential.
