(Photo by Todd Mowatt) A new and unique fund-raising activity hits Huron bounty In the early days of fund raising people held walk-a-thons, bike-a-thons, swim-a- thons and skate-a-thons. Now the Huron County wing of the Canadian heart fund is travelling around the county promoting the jump rope for heart program. That' 'ght, you've gotit a jump-a-thon. The event is held at indi idual schoo throughout Huron County. Divided into teams, the participant - , sponsors and train for thetwo-hour vent. Don Young, organizer of the pro:: am, says that everyone is encouraged o participate. Secretaries, teachers, , rincipals and parents are also urged to j t. in on the fun. "The sole purpose of th event is not only to make money, but t.. promote physical fitness," said Don Youn According to Mr. Young a number of top athletes such as WayneGretzky and Shawn O'Slivan skip to stay in shape. The program began in -Huron County when the Wingham Public School started its, own skipping club three years ago. Now a total of ten schools have skipping clubs and hold a number of jump -a -thous each year. To date three events have been held and. $1,300 has been raised for tjhe heart fund. The money that is collected from these jump-a-thons goes to fund research into heart disease. "At one event last year a little three-year old boy was sitting in the audience watching the demonstration. A couple of months before he had open heart surgery, when you witness a child like that you know what you are doing is worth it," said Mr. Young. This year the Wingham skipping group has been honored at several different events throughout Ontario.
