The Wingham Public school jump rope for heart travel group came
to St. Mary's school last Friday to display their skipping .talents.

,ty,try1ug to set up s'':v ppiug mar thous to raise money for the Cana-
dian Heart Fund. St. Mary's school will be holding a skipping fund
raiser sometime in May. (Photo by Todd Mowatt)
A new and unique fund-raising
activity hits Huron bounty
In the early days of fund raising people
held walk-a-thons, bike-a-thons, swim-a-
thons and skate-a-thons. Now the Huron
County wing of the Canadian heart fund is
travelling around the county promoting the
jump rope for heart program. That' 'ght,
you've gotit a jump-a-thon.
The event is held at indi idual schoo
throughout Huron County. Divided into
teams, the participant - , sponsors and
train for thetwo-hour vent.
Teams consist of si junipers and during
the fund raiser at leas ine'member of the
team must be skipping . .11 times. Don
Young, organizer of the pro:: am, says that
everyone is encouraged o participate.
Secretaries, teachers, , rincipals and
parents are also urged to j t. in on the fun.
"The sole purpose of th event is not only
to make money, but t.. promote physical
fitness," said Don Youn
According to Mr. Young a number of top
athletes such as WayneGretzky and Shawn
O'Slivan skip to stay in shape.
The program began in -Huron County
when the Wingham Public School started its,
own skipping club three years ago. Now a
total of ten schools have skipping clubs and
hold a number of jump -a -thous each year.
To date three events have been held and.
$1,300 has been raised for tjhe heart fund.
The money that is collected from these
jump-a-thons goes to fund research into
heart disease.
"At one event last year a little three-year
old boy was sitting in the audience watching
the demonstration. A couple of months
before he had open heart surgery, when you
witness a child like that you know what you
are doing is worth it," said Mr. Young.
This year the Wingham skipping group
has been honored at several different events
throughout Ontario. Last year the group Skippers show their stuff at SCIVlary s school display.
was honored in Toronto at the annual Heart
Fund dinner, as well they open fairs and
perforin throughout Huron County.
