"If you keep pumping the water out of your basements, it's going to find its way into the next man's basement. The only answer is a municipal drain," he said. The ratepayers, who live on Nairn Drive and Pentland Street, said it was the first o'' time in 20 years that their homes had water in the basement. "With two pumps going, I'm holding steady with SIS of an inch of water on my basement . floor but I can see it seeping back into the cracks. I can't get the water into the ditch at the 4th Concession and if 1 do get it to the 4th, it's still not going anywhere," said Charlie Cadman. Vi Stringer, of Nairn Drive, said water ruined the finished basement in her house which has been taking water for the past three weeks. "This is my first year for water in my basement and I don't want to be back here next year. I don't want to hear it•was a had winter. There's got to be a solution," she said. Tom Grasby, of Pentland Ave., who complained two weeks ago to council about the water in his basement said he was angry that it took seven people to complain to council before any action was taken. "If I had a swimrning pool in my yard without a fence, I'd be in trouble. But, it's okay to have four feet of water in my yard. I had enough water in my yard to drown someone two weeks ago when you came to laugh at me when water was -coming in my basement," he said. Goderich Township Works Superinten- dent, Joe Potter told the ratepayers that the drain in the culvert along the 4th Con- cession had been plugged up with dirt from the wet weather. The weather wasn't the only cause of the flooding, said Arnold Doak, of Pentland Ave. "We've been out there 20 years and never' had that happen to us," he said. Mr. Doak said water is sitting on both sides' of the 4th Concession. As well, he said his well had the first bad reading ever in 20 years and a 10 foot level of water 'when the usual level was three feet. Bob Goodwin, a resident of the subdivi- sion since 1958, said he believed the pro- blem to be a rising water table. "The problem is more complex than try- ing to drain water through a culvert that's too small. The water we're using for domestic purposes is • going back into the When It Has To Be Done Right - CaII Jack & Gord LEAMEN `Your Authorized Alcan Product Supplier & Installer For This Area' OVER 45 YEARS COMBINED BUILDING EXPERIENCE 524-9647 524-4228 Arnold Doak, of Pentland Street in the VLA subdivision of Goderich Township stands in a two foot deep pond created on the lawn of Tom Grasby's house from water pumped out of his basement. The answer, said Mr. Goodwin, is peti- tioning the town of Goderich to ap- propriate the subdivision so town sewers could be used. "What we have lost in furniture and damaged property this year alone would probably be equal to one year's taxes for a municipal drain. I have a $70,000 house; the value's going to go out the window sale - wise if I have water in my basement every year.'Nobody will want it," he said. The township's engineer was scheduled to melt with the ratepayers on Tuesday morning to discuss: possible soli>Itions. In order to get a municipal drain, 60 per cent of the 52 homeowners; in the subdivi- sion will have to sign a petition or the owner of 60 per cent of the acreage of the affected land will have to petition for a municipal drain.
