DATED AT THE VILLAGE OF BAYFIELD THIS 27th DAY OF MARCH, 1985. Patrick M. Graham Clerk -Treasurer Village of Bayfleld Box 99 BAYFIELD, Ontario NOM 100 (519) 565-2455 Captain Maurice Richardson and Chief Engineer Wilfred Meadows were presented with gifts from Goderich Mayor Eileen Palmer and Town Clerk Administrator Larry McCabe last Friday when their ship, the Algowood was the first ship to arrive in port this season. The ship, shown below, was loaded with salt before it continued on its way to Chicago. ,(Hundertmark photos) Captain says he'll try to be first Though it's his first time as captain of the first ship into the Goderich harbor, 1, Captain Maurice Richardson, says he'll try to be the first ship in next year. Arriving in Goderich on Friday around noon, he and the crew of Algowood loaded up the freight ship with 29,000 tons of salt in ' Goderich on its way from Windsor t Chicago. "The crew likes to be the first ship into port," says Captain Richardson. The race into a harbor for the first time after the ice breaks is often the cause of a friendly rivalry between captains, especially in ports like Goderich where the event'ls recognized. "I was the first into Thunder Bay and in- to Sault Ste. Marie so this is my third time as first into a port;" says Captain Richard- son, who's been a ship's captain for 28 years of the 44 years he's been sailing. "When we were coming in Sault Ste. Marie, an oil tanker from Sarnia was behind us. We were taking 'a higher chan- nel and she was. taking a lower channel. Coming through the lower channel, she got gtuck and we k rew we Mrere safe.- She it .431bcked. ,the cannel fa>y twQ "or three days,"he says. — This year, the captain•says there was no one behind him coming into Goderich where he was given a box of cigars, a gift from the town and a welcome from Mayor Eileen Palmer and other councillors and • TMT. "It makes it more interesting with a new captain in this year," says Mayor Palmer. "This way, we get to pass the :eat and the cigars arohnd a little bit mope."
