None of 'the usual 'things
that go on during a hockey
game, happened until the last_
two minutes of the YGW C
division championship final
- between Wingham and
Harriston, on _Saturday. For ,
the first 33 minutes of the 35
minute game, no one scored,
assisted or even took a
penalty, in the tight- checking
match, which eventually saw
Wingham win 1-0, to claim the
championship.
When the game started,
both teams were playing a
defensive style,, with every

Wingham got the first real
scoring chance of the game:

stole the puck from Harriston
attackers at centre ice, and
went in all alone on a

Harriston netminder Jason

Through the rest of the first
frame, and much of the
second, the play continued
back and forth, mostly

looking like a streng.

looked like no one was going-
to do, on a two -on -one break,
when he took' a pass, from a
Wingham teammate and slid
thepuck under Pilkington.
With 22 seconds left in the
game, Harriston tried to
restore the deadlock with
their net empty in favor of a. •
Wiigham manages win over Seaforth
Wingham received the
sportsmanship trophy, along
with winning 4-3 against
SeafOrth in an end-to-end
action -packed C division
semi-final game. Wingham
recived the sportsmanship
award for being the least -
penalized western Ontario
team in this year's YCW
tourney.
Once the game was
underway, it wasn't long
before Brian Cook came up -
his wing and passed t� Jason
McNichol, who positioned
himself perfectly, to score
Seaforth's first goal.
After alternating gordrol of
the puck between the two
teams for a while, Wingham
managed to recover it. Jeff
McKee shot, and on the
rebound, Michael Elmslie
scored to tie the score at 1-1.
From the neutral zone,
Mckee scored with a
wristshot that by-passed the
Harriston dominates

A heartstopping match -up
between Harriston and
Mooretown was kept to a one
goal margin for much of the
game until the final seconds,
when Harriston's David Ross
skated quickly down the left
wing where he was knocked
off balance with the
Mooretown goal unprotected.
Still fighting *hen he was
down, be slapped the puck in
front where Greg McNevan
fired it into the empty -net to
make the final score .3-1
advancing Harriston to the B
division championship game.
David Ross weaved around -
Mooretown defenders but still
took a shot while falling, but
Mooretown goalie Paul
Knight blocked the attack.
The ,rebound came out to
Harriston's Jeff Benninger
who. flicked ° it at the net
deflectilig it_off_a_Mooretown
defenseman .who was
covering the pal for his out
of position and the
players so Wingham jumped
ahead before the end of the •
second period. •
Seaforth made a comeback
to tie the score 3-3 with •
McNichol jabbing it in and
Brent Van den Akker also
scoring, as the Wingham
goaltender made a valiant
effort to save each time.
At 8:41 Jason Bloemberg
suddenly broke the tie with a
slapshot at the blueline that
went between the legs of the
gealman.
Mike Van Loom made a
brilliant save as the pick
• went around_ the net and a
defender- cleared it' ° before
• Wingham had a chance to
come Close for another point.

and skates.
Benninger gave Bengston
the 2-0 lead on a lone effort.
- As he broke in fast, he rifled a
slapshot from the top of the
• circle which went in off
the Bengston defense and
whipped a low wristshot into
Harriaton's netminder Jason
Pilkington's short side
creating an interesting
situation for the third period,
for it was the first time in the
• tournament that Harriston
left the ice after two periods
of play with a lead; they have
been a comeback team all
through the tournament.
