It doesn't Matter very much that the date

of Christmas, in our custom, replaces a
celebration of the winter solstice. We do not
know the actual date of the birth -of Jesus,
and it must have seemed good to those early °
Christians to replace pagan celebrations
with Christian ones.
Similarly with Easter, although we do
know the calends date of the Resurrection
Of Christ because of its coming at Passover
time, it also corn after the spring equinox

But, as Easter approaches, I do not -feel
any real solidarity with those ancestors of

of oar own resurrection from the dead,
which we have been given by our Lord Jesus

Lent, the period of preparation for Easter,
is a word derived from Old English and
related to lengthen - the days grow longer in
the spring as Easter approaches. Surely we
should rejoice that winter is ending and the
work of Christ is being fulfilled in our time.
The world around us is full of hope, and I
cannot be otherwise.
