"We try to make people understand why
they have to do therapeutic exercises.
Often the reason for pain is disfunction and
exercise will help to decrease the pain
while improving the function," says Mr.
Remtulla.
While working towards the goal of help-
ing the patient to achieve the highest possi-
ble level of independent functioning, the
physiotherapist works with other health
professionals such as speech pathologists,
nurses, social workers and physicians for
all round treatment.
But, no matter what the treatment, the
attitude of the patient can be the determin-
ing factor of the success of the treatment.
"We use a lot of home exercise pro-
grams and the patient's compliance is
very important. They won't progress if
they don't do it," says Mr. Remtulla.
One of the chronic problems facing the
physiotherapy department at the hospital
- is the out-patient waiting list.. Although
both the staff and space of the department
has grown resulting in a higher quality of
care in the past three years, Mr. Remtulla
says the demands for service still far
outweigh what the staff can cope with.
"We're in a profession where we're deal-
ing with people in pain and usually the
longer they wait, the longer the therapy
takes," he says.
Every patient who takes physiotherapy
is referred by a doctor and the patients in
the hospital often take priority over outpa-
tients. Each outpatient's name goes on a
list for an average wait of one to three
months. Treatment sessions, which in-
dividually take 30 to 45 minutes, usually
„fast from one t4ae weeks,.

its knowledge with workshops, courses and,
shared knowledge within the department.
"We realize that the financial restraints
