She does this by giving them a little something to think about at each meeting that will help them get through the next week, deals with problems areas and how to avoid the mun- chies. She,,a lsoteaches her classes how to go out for di!'nerr to a restauraunt or to a friend's' and still stick to the program. Mrs. McLeod often relates the problems she had and still has, in her battle to lose weight. Once, she went out for dinner with her husband to a restauraunt and asked for a veal eutiet without the sauce, mashed potatos instead of french fries and tomato slices. A half hour later, the waitress brought the food and it Wasn't anywhere near what she had ordered. On her plate was a large veal cutlet smothered in mouth-watering sauce, a heaping pile of golden browned french fries and a large pile of green beans. Her husband urged her to eat the meal and not to bother the busy waitress. But Mrs. McLeod knew that if she ate the meal she would dread every mouthful. She returned the meal to the waitress and 20 minutes ` later her meal arrived. It was cold but the way she wanted it. You then settle into your seat and com- mence gobbling up the low cal dip. When the bowl is empty and the garnishes are gone you decide to ask how the dip was made. • Your hostess replies, diet mayonnaise, four spices and four cups of sour cream. You cringe at the thought of stepping on the scales as you realize how many calories you have eaten in such a short period of time. According to Mrs. McLeod, when you are dieting you have to be tactful but you have to ask what the ingredients are before you eat anything when you are visiting friends. Doesn't that look good, how did you make it? is a good approach. When your hostess tells you she used 1/2 pound of butter and ic- ing sugar, you will know that the snack is" not for you, no matter how good it looks.' "Don't settle for second best where your weight is concerned. If you do that often enough, the next time you go visiting the person will more often than not have something.prepared that you will be allowed • to eat," said Mrs. McLeod. The tendency for people who are losing weight is for them to cut down for a few days and then go on a binge. People have set goals and rules for the way they live. If you walk through your kitchen and you spot' a slice of lemon meringue pie on the counter, you should go out of the room for 10 minutes until the craving passes. Then, im- agine how that piece of lemon pie will look on their weigh scale or in their diary. The rule to follow between meals is to put Countdown is a weight loss and weight control group that was founded in 1979 by Valerie McLeod of Kincardine, She lost 104 pounds and as a result of her dieting experiences, she started her own weight loss program: She is seen here, with a few of the articles of clothing she used to wear before she lost the weight. She is also shown awarding Steve Berry a com- modation for losing 58 pounds in nine weeks. It may not have put Steve in the Guiness book of World Records, but it -has made him a big man around town without the extra weight. FIRST CHOICE AUCTION CO. Col. Easter is the next chocolaty holiday and all ,Easter items are loaded with calories. One'Easter ° creme egg has 636 calories and jelly beans have 102 calories per ounce. One ounce of jelly beans translates into eight little colored balls of sugar. Also,, the little foil bunnies that you can buy in a cor- ner store have 175 calories and they only take two bites before they are gone. With Easter only being a day long holiday the pressures not to eat aren't that intense. However Mrs. McLeod cautions her pupils and tells them to use what they have learned in their battle against the Easter bunny. "Mothers tell their children never to go in- to their purses, yet when the kids put their Easter or Halloween treats in the closets and the parents go into them, it's the same thing as a child going into his mother's purse. After all, we had our treats when we were kids," she said: A veteran meter, Mrs. McLeod went to her weight loss meetings, got up in front of the 40 or so people and told of her closet eating habit. Then, a number of other people in her group came out of the closet. One lady told the group how she would hide chocolate bars underneath her mat- tress and eat them when her husband was asleep. Another lady would tape chocolate bars to the back of the toilet and go in and eat them at her leisure. The next lady told of how she had bought a dozen donuts and she wanted to heat one up in the Microwave. She heated one while her husband was in the washroom brushing his teeth. Her husband came out of the washroom and asked her what she had been eating. She vehemently denied lifting anything to hei,c;, lips. Her husband told her to go and look i the mirror and sure enough, she had whi donut powder all over her face. Her husband' caught her eating on the si' and that made her face' up to the fact that. she had to honest with herself. A number of people who have tried t Countdown program are experienc tremendous results. Her most success dieters are Mark Doherty and SteVe Be Doherty lost 80 pounds and Berry lost pounds in nine weeks following the Co ' down diet plan.
