OPP to use headlights
24 hours a day on all cars
All marked and unmarked Ontario Pro-
vincial Police vehicles are now being
operated with headlights turned on 24 hours
a day.
OPP Commissioner Archie Ferguson has
ordered this move in the interests of safety
and increased visibility of patrolling
cruisers.
"We believe it will afford our people that
extra measure of protection," said Commis-
sioner Ferguson. "It will make our vehicles
more visible, and we hope people will see
the police cruiser and use extra "caution. ".
Studies by organizations interested in
highway safety have shown that vehicles us-
ing headlights during daylight hours have
less chance of being involved in accidents.
Those that were involved in accidents suf-
fered Less severe dainage anu injuries.
One reason is that a vehicle with
headlights on appears to be closer to the
other driver. Also, they can be seen more
easily in rear-view mirrors on heavily
travelled highways or at longer distances on
'two-lane highways where cars are passing.
Bus and truck companies have been using
headlights in the daytime for a number of
years. The cost of using headlights in
daylight hours is minimal; so other Ontario
road users could easily follow the OPP ex-
ample. . - - , ..., .
Commissioner Perguson ' said: "Aside
from increasing the safety factor for our of-
ficers, we believe that a more visible cruiser
will prevent P traffic violations by other
highway users. As a result, our roadways
should be safer."

sponsored by the Multiple Sclerosis Associa-
tion and Huron County Health Unit, is being
planned in Huron County for early October.

of information on the disease itself, coping
with the disease, and information on support
facilities available.

Ontario Multiple Sclerosis Society has of-
fered to assist in the planning of the
workshop. Other planning members are
