Stars in OMHA playoffs The 1984-85 hockey season came to an end for the Signal -Star Juveniles on the weekend as they dropped two games to Amherstburg North Stars. The back-to-back victories were the se- cond and third of the best -of -five series for Arnherstburg and propelled them into the OMHA semi-finals. The quarter final series got off to a com- bative but productive start for the Signal - Stars as they dumped the North Stars 5-2 here in the opener last weekend before los- ing 7-5 in the second game. The third game of the series was' one- sided score wise as the home town North Stars ripped the visiting 9-0 in a penalty - filled game. Goderich lost three players to match and game misconducts as did Amherstburg. Initially, the Stars were only kept off the scorestteet and held back from taking a lead in the series by a series of hit goalposts, crossbars and othermissed op- portunities. Amherstburg seared twice in the first period and blew the game open with four goals in the final period. They ad- ded three more goals in the third period to complete the rout. Blake Vandenam led the offense with four goals and two assists. Minus several players due to miscon- ducts, injuries -and holidays; the -Stars put-- up ut- up a good fight in game 4 only to lose 4-2 in the final minute. Amherstburg opened the scoring mid- way through the first period and took a 2-0 lead with a goal in the last minute of the period. The teams then played through a scoreless second period which meant the Signal -Stars had gone through five scoreless periods. They finally solved the mystery of goaltender Greg Carter and got back in the game with a goal by the third line. Matt Wilkinson converted a pass from Tian Jaynes and Lee Frisby to score the , Goderich goal. Amherstburg restored its two -goal lead midway through the final period a. • Richard Bratt beat Randy Gaynor in the Goderich goal. Trailing by two goals and facing elimination, Gaynor was pulled in favor of an extra attacker with two minutes re- maining in the game. The move by coach Peter Crew , who was replacing Doug Cruickshank for game 4, appeared to backfire as the North Stars scored to take a 4-1 Lead with one minute remaining. But the Stars never quit as Brent Williamson scored with 45 seconds remain- ing and John Graham scored again with just 16 seconds remaining to pull Goderich within a single goal at 4-3. _ But despite the last-minute effort, the Stars fell one goal short and dropped a 4-3 decision in losing the best -of -five series three games to one. Coach Doug Cruickshank complimented his players and fellow coach Pete Crew for their effort on the weekend and all season. . . The members of the Signal -Star juveniles include; Randy Gaynor, Jay • Williamson; -Ray- Vantsone; -Jeff—Lebeauril Brent Williamson, Tim Chisholm, Mat Wilkinson, Darren Doak, Chris Sideris, Rob Dupee, John Graham, Darren Connel- ly, Ken Huff, Lee Frisby, Trevor Martin, , Tim Jaynes and Kevin Telford. The coaching staff includes Doug Cruickshank, Peter Crew, Rob Sherwood and Darcy Doak.
