public agreed that smoking is Statistical-
ly strongly' correlated with lung cancer, a
large hurdle. was jumped. When the
public
agreesthat drinking and striving is
statistically highly correlated with ac-
cidents, another big jump will have been
made.
But then, we will all have to change our
drinking behaviour, as .we already have.
with our smoking behaviour. At one time,.
there were more smokers than non-
smokers. Today, less than half the adult
population smokes. in some local
surveys, the number of people admitting
to drunken driving is as high as one in
three. This behaviour should be totally
eliminated, since unlike smoking, it is
never a pleasant habit. After all, an
automobile accident can murder inno-
cent
nnercent people,
Unfortunately, it is -difficult to stop im-
paired driving entirely, because we live
in a society wedded to both drinking by
itself and driving by itself. It is inevitable
then, that there will be some overlap and

However, it might be better for society
if everyone agrees not to mix drinking
and driving. Those who do drink and
drive should be discouraged by their
friends and family while those who do. not
drink and drive should be encouraged by
everyone.
