and operated by Bob Stephenson. He sells, services and distributes modern telephone
systems for both residential and commercial use. Bob also sells novelty phones and all of
the hook up apparatus. He has systems in six Goderich businesses, and he is seen here at

Merchants discuss -retail woes
More than 35 Goderich merchants crowd-
ed into the council chambers at the town hall
on Monday evening after discussing a
number of current retailing problems. They
voted unanimously to form a Goderich
Retail Merchants' Association– the first of
its kind here in many yeats. The new
organization will deal with those problems
which the Goderich Board of Trade (non-
, existant for the past seven years) dealt with
as well as new ones created by the changing
times.
Increases of $200 per year in the salary
schedule of Goderich public school teachers
were granted by the public school board at
its regular meeting last week. The board in-
creased the maximum salary from $2,900 to
$3,200. No change was made in the
minimum salary of $2,100:
The "Goderich figure skating club
presented its annual carnival last Friday
night at the Goderich memnrial arena.

The steamer Midland Queen was being fit-
ted for use as a package freighter. Chief
Engineer McGregor had a staff of 20 men
putting in the decks. The Midland Queen had
been a package freighter, but for the past
six years had been engaged as a grain
vessel.
The Signal reported: "A fish over three in-
ches long came through the water tap at the
Signal office this morning. It looks as if
there ought to be a muzzle on the town's in-
take
ntake pipe.

Will the opening of the Navigation system
at Goderich harbor be early or late this
year? That's an annual question with the ap-
proach of spring. There are those who feel
that this spring will see navigation opening
earlier than last year when it was about
mid-April before the first grain boats head-
ed out to the Upper Lakes. To speed up the
breaking up of the ice in the harbor..A forc-
ed air system is being employed the same as
last year, so that the winter fleet boats can
be moved as early as possible.

jorie Baxter is going to Agadir to help the
thousands of refugees in that stricken city.
When the nurses arrived, they learned that
the refugees had been evacuated from the
devestated area.
Eighty-six teams from Newfoundland to
Winnepeg have entered the Lions Club's
Young Canada Week. New Chairman Bruee
Erskine is faced with the task of checking
out 1,500 birth and player certificates. They
need a foreign languages interpreter,
because certificates of young Canadians in-
clude those who were born in China,
Ethiopia, Latvia, Germany, Holland and
Italy. Another oddity—the' team from Six
Nations Indian Reservation included six
players, all with the same surname, Hill.

triple grading
at Kingsbridge
Thein will be no 'Grade 6, 7 and 8
.studefltSin one'classroom at Kingsbridge
Catholic school.
The Huron -Perth, Roman Catholic
Separate School board said it will not have
triple grading in the senior classes. The
decision was made at the board's Feb. 25
meeting.
Now, Grade 4, 5 and 6 students at
Kingsbridge, located north of Goderich,
are in one classroom and there was some
concern that the triple grading would
carry on to the senior classes.
Other classes at the school have two
grades in each.
Administration was also given the
authority to hire a teacher's aide if
necessary for triple graded classes at
Kingsbridge next year. This is the first
time administration has had such authori-
ty in classes other than special education.

The Goderich and District After Five Club
held it s "A New Look" Dessert and Coffee
at the Saltford Valley Hall, Tuesday, Feb. 26
with Joanne Poelman representing
Norholme Interior Decorating for our "A
New Room" Special Feature.
Joanne brought some displaysand ex-
plained how important it is to keep to a basic
color scheme throughout the whole house.
She gave us some very interesting ideas that
will save us from making costly mistakes by
thinking out our plans before we do our
spending.
Colleen Maguire especially honored us
with a song she wrote herself entitled "This
Man That I Love."
Our speaker was Shirley Koch and she
shared with us how she. has been very for-
tunate to have had a happy childhood and
marriage. We enjoyed her sense of humor
as she shared some times she had when her
now four teenagers were all.small.
Our next meeting* will be held at Saltford
Valley Hall on Tuesday, Mar. 26 at 7:30 p.m.
